How would you layout this living room?

I'm having a bit of a design dilemma with my new living room layout. It’s a long, narrow room, and I’m not sure how to arrange everything, especially since I don’t want the TV on the chimney breast.

I have a TV unit and sideboard from my old place but need a new sofa and other bits so am completely open to any suggestions.

The hearth around the stove is quite large, which I think is adding to my layout struggle.
Any advice or layout suggestions would be really appreciated!

I would get someone in to see if you can knock that fire surround out and move the woodburner back into the actual chimney space. The chimney looks good and wide so I don't know why they've got it stuck out like that- possibly just to save the cost of altering the fire surround. Agree dont put the TV above the woodburner as the heat doesnt do them a lot of good.

I would personally put a (or two?) recliners in front of the patio doors so I could sit there with a coffee and stare out aimlessly. So then I’d put in a book case near that so I could read and look out of the window alternately.

I’d get sofas to fit the space and put the telly on a unit. I also hate a tv on a chimney breast.

Myfailedstory · 14/11/2024 19:23

No telly needed with that view! Do you have a floor plan? I’m terrible with anything visual but there will be someone along who can help. Can you have a TV corner somewhere so
that it doesn’t dominate the whole room (seeing as you don’t want it above the chimney)?

You could also have it on one side of the chimney breast… L shaped soFA?

Completely agree, it’s such an odd set up really.

Aah a reading nook with a cosy armchair is something I also envisioned. I’ve got my eye on a sofa for the space but it’s four seater so not sure if it will be too big? I’m thinking of the TV being on a unit in between the chimney breast and the door on the right.

Yeah we also had a horrible 80s/90s brick monstrosity which my husband loved whacking out. Now had it plastered and it’s all smooth and the wood burner is in its rightful home 😊

Here’s a floor plan :)

I’m thinking maybe the TV goes on a unit in the space to the right of the chimney breast? But unsure of what kind of sofa would be best.

How about an L shaped sofa where you’re thinking one will go. Then your comfy chair, side table for your coffee/wine and shelves up near the doors? So you’ve got a tv lounge area and a chill out with the view area?

I def think you should splurge on getting the hearth sorted though. Had a house once where we didn’t, and always regretted it.

PiggieWig · 14/11/2024 19:38

I’d have a sofa and two armchairs (where the Xs are on my pic) with bookshelves either side of the window

You’ve got a path of travel between the door and the patio doors so I wouldn’t put furniture in the way of that. So I’d do a sofa or corner sofa on the back wall of the door side of the room with the tv opposite - next to the wood burner.

sort the chimney situation so the wood burner sits within it.

Then reading/garden viewing by the patio window - shelves on the wall and a couple of comfy chairs that can swivel to look out or in to socialise

How about this. Big sofa on a diagonal with a plant or lamp behind. Second seating option (big chair or mini sofa) on the other diagonal. Plus maybe a big footstool or bean bags for kids or teens if needed.

I wouldn’t place all the furniture and tv at an angle, this will make the room feel small and askew.

could you put the tv on the wall opposite the patio doors? With a large l shape sofa, giving you options of facing the tv or fireplace.

the massive hearth surround has to go.

Then add a couple of armchairs, one in a reading nook by the PDs.

I'd put thetv on the fireplace. Otherwise you've for too many focal points, someone is always compromised watching the TV if its off to the side, or your furniture is all bunched up at one end. I'd also avoid putting furniture in front of patio doors as I like easy access and flow through a room.
Are you likely to use the Woodburer and the radiator? Definitely get the Woodburner put back into the chimney if so, or remove it if you're unlikely to use.
I'm also not a fan of radiators under windows, I've never really believed the heat doesn't just disappear out of them. Maybe loot to move to another internal wall, perhaps by the door?

Iliketulips · 15/11/2024 10:55

I'd start with your sofa and either put that opposite the fireplace or near to the internal wall, so you have a good view of the garden, or at least a couple of comfy chairs on the internal wall.
