Lounge diner - do you have one?

As always, I’m browsing properties, as we’re thinking of downsizing.
seen a lovely village house, kitchen not big enough to eat in, lounge is good sized, long, space for a dining table easily.
we had this arrangement in our first house but I can’t remember if it was annoying or not.
is it?

we have a lounge/diner and I wouldn’t go back to separate rooms. I love that when one of us is cooking we can still chat and watch TV. It’s cosy and practical.

My living area, kitchen and dining area are all one decent sized long room. I like it, it’s nice and big for when family is here and handy when it’s just me.

We have a separate kitchen and a lounge diner in our new place. I like it, we had a bigger kitchen in the old house with a dining table but tended to eat in the living room anyway as it was cosier. At least now we can be cosy and don’t have to eat on our laps!
It’s just the 2 of us though, I think if we had children I’d prefer a dine in kitchen.

Hate lounge diners!

Well they're semi ok with older children but horrid with younger ones as there's all the distractions of toys/ tv/ play stuff. Or if you have a separate living room too.

Love a kitchen diner to chat and cook.

We do. Kitchen is just big enough for a small table which we eat at for informal meals.

We have a larger living room that serves as a lounge diner.

We like it and I find it preferable to a living/dining/kitchen arrangement (which we had when we lived in a more modern open plan house).

We have living room, double sliding doors to dining room which is open to the kitchen. It's quite nice to be able to close the doors but, if we couldn't, I'd pick open plan over mini rooms

Gulbekian · 13/11/2024 18:40

We have a lounge/diner and don't find it annoying at all. We do also have one very small table in the kitchen but it only fits one, two at a push, so is really just for a quick snack. I suppose we would find a separate dining room a little too formal for the way our family operates.

What we have actively avoided is having an open kitchen. We don't want the smells or noise of cooking in the lounge and we don't want to look at unwashed dishes (not that that happens all that often). And I most certainly don't want guests watching me cook 😁.

We have a kitchen / diner / lounge combo
But , we also have a small sitting room and a full dining room
We practically live in the combo room ( but it is nice to have his n hers tellies ! )

Dawevi · 13/11/2024 18:41

We have sliding doors in between our dining and living rooms, I mostly have it open but I like that there's some wall and that we can shut it off if needed. I don't like open plan.

CocoDC · 13/11/2024 18:42

We have glass doors between the kitchen diner and the lounge so we can open it all up when we want to & keep things seperate when it’s more appropriate

dannimay · 13/11/2024 19:07

We have a lounge diner all open plan. It looks very nice and modern but there are pros and cons. Pros, you can chat and watch tv while cooking and also the kids sometimes get involved more as they can see what's being cooked. Cons, hosting can be awkward as you have to be super organised as everyone can see what you're doing and how you're cooking. Also the smell is everywhere.

MiddleAgedDread · 13/11/2024 19:14

Mine is a lounge diner and it doesn’t bother me at all until I have guests and then I wish I had a kitchen diner as it would be more sociable as I could cook and talk at the same time. I don’t like open plan kitchen and living room, that means you have to be really tidy in the kitchen or you’re watching tv with it in the background!

LindaDawn · 13/11/2024 20:18

I think because you say the lounge is long then that would be ok as you can section it off ie have defined lounge and dinning area. If you do lots of entertaining you might prefer to not be shut off in the kitchen. Always compromises.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 13/11/2024 20:25

Thanks everyone, really helpful.
currently I have an open plan kitchen to large dining area to large lounge, then a separate lounge. I would like a separate kitchen as, as pp said, the smell and noise from the kitchen goes everywhere. But ideally would have kitchen semi open to diner, then double doors to lounge!
in the one I’m looking at the kitchen is right across the hall from the lounge diner so it doesn’t flow.

We’ve got a separate closed off dining room in our new house and I absolutely love it. Just moved from an open plan flat so having rooms that are all there in their own right is quite the novelty for us!

FrogFairy · 13/11/2024 21:14

I have a lounge diner. I live alone and just have a couple of occaisional guests e.g. for Christmas dinner. I have bought a table that seats four but folds down to a console table which is plenty big enough for just me.
