5 cupboards in a row. Which way should the doors open?

5 kitchen island cupboards on the outer side of the kitchen, opening out onto the living area. Should the doors open:
All the same? In which case left or right?
Towards the centre - but what about the middle one?
Towards the edge - again what about the middle?
Two pairs and what?
Random - to keep our brains alert in our old age?

There won't be any handles, all you'll see are the plain cupboard fronts.

PS we're all right handed if that makes a difference.

If they're all single units I'd do them all the same, with hinges on the left and opening on the right. If any are double, wouldn't you do those so they open like a dresser does, with the hinges to the outside? (And you wouldn't have this issue if they were drawers...)

2 sets of doubles and make the middle one a boom shelf instead.

gingercat02 · 13/11/2024 08:20

I would either have them all the same (opening to the right imo) or have 2 doubles and a single or a central double and all the rest opening to the right.

I have this, but on a wall. Mine go left, left, left, right, right. I've never found it a problem.

Chemenger · 13/11/2024 08:25

Two doubles and a single opening to the right. However if it isn’t too late I would replace all of them with drawers.

Xiaoxiong · 13/11/2024 08:34

Double, double, far right one opening to the right.

magicstar1 · 13/11/2024 08:34

If you can, make at least one a set of deep drawers. They’re so much handier than shelves.
Otherwise , I’d have all the hinges on the right.

EvilMama · 13/11/2024 08:44

Argh! I know I was just thinking one should be drawers but I'm already waaaaayyy over budget! They're half depth though, not full, the full depth ones open on the other side of the island into the kitchen and they're drawers. None of them are "double" cupboards as they're 70cm wide.
I've earmarked one for board games and two for crockery.

2 opening in pairs.
One on the end opening away from the rest of the row.

Stand in the kitchen and approach each cupboard from your most used area, then hinge accordingly.

I have a mix in my kitchen- the kitchen designer put the hinges where I needed them so two cupboards next to each ended up opening like a butterfly with the left hand cupboard having hinges on the right and right cupboard with left hinges. It works due to the kitchen layout as the left hand cupboard is easiest to access from the left and the right hand cupboard is always approached from the right.

Pfpppl · 13/11/2024 09:26

I'd either do the 2 on each end as if they were a double or the 2 on the left opening to the left with the 2 on the right opening to the right. In either case the middle can be whatever your preference is - personally I'd open to the left so you have your right hand free to take something out/ put something in.

2 doubles, 1 pull put larder, or 1 open shelves?

Futurethinking2026 · 13/11/2024 21:34

I’d have two doubles and then one single on the right (opening to the rights / hinges on the right).
