Where did all the garages go?

Ok so I know a lot of garages with properties succumb to conversion as they are often too small for todays cars and it makes better sense to utilise the space.

BUT I really want a garage, so many houses I'm seeing on the market in our search for a new home that tick lots of boxes but no garage.

It could be converted back but then I would feel like I'm overpaying for some of the space which is now included as "more valuable" square footage but I would rather it was a garage.

Do garages not add as much value anymore, don't people want to have their car secure?

I'm also house hunting and seeing the same trend - especially with new builds.
That being said I don't particularly want a garage so It doesn't bother me either way - the cost of a new build with vs without a garage is significant though

A friend of mine works in insurance and said insurance actually goes up if you say you park your car in the garage as you are more likely to leave it unlocked

Also parking a wet car in a garage is more likely to cause it to rust

Leaving an unlocked car in a locked garage is the same as leaving a locked car outside , they both still need breaking into. Plus its less likely to be targeted and also vandalised in a garage.

cars don’t rust anymore in a garage than they do outside

I don’t want a garage for the car but I do want it for the storage. Also garage conversions often really screw the layout around if they’re done on a budget- you end up with a sitting room off the kitchen next to the utility or even worse they build some weird little corridor to it.
