Find me somewhere to live - Berks/ Oxfordshire

Can anyone help with my property search please? We don’t currently live in the area but are considering a move to Berkshire or thereabouts.

The new house needs to be within easy driving distance of good schools and ideally not too rural - within walking distance of a handful of shops and amenities would be ideal! We like green spaces/ parks, and would like a small, manageable garden.

We are looking for a three bed semi detached if possible but would settle for a two bed. Our budget is £380k - £400k at the most.

We don’t need to be particularly close to London. We would prefer somewhere quite quiet but with larger towns within easy reach. Is this even feasible for our budget or should we give up before we’ve even started? 😁

I don’t know berks well but I think a lot of the nicer areas are really expensive because of the proximity to London so if you’re looking for more for your money Oxfordshire is probably a better bet. I’d consider Charlbury and Wallingford, both nice places with good communities and amenities and beautiful walks/ scenery.

Twyford or Maidenhead will get you on the Elizabeth Line.

Earley gets you Maiden Erlegh secondary school and a train station - Woodley is only over the footbridge though and for £400K you'd get a lot more for your money in RG5 than RG6 or elsewhere. There's two secondaries in Woodley and frequent buses into Reading for the station.

There's a pinned master thread about moving to Reading on the Reading reddit.

How about Chipping Norton and surrounding villages? (Oxfordshire)

Twiglets1 · 11/11/2024 16:53

I was going to suggest Caversham too, though the budget may be an issue. It’s on the Berkshire/Oxfordshire border.

I would suggest Newbury, maybe Hungerford, but I am not sure your budget would run to the sort of property you are looking for.

Eynsham and Witney are in your price range and have good schools and amenities.

TizerorFizz · 12/11/2024 08:28

There certainly are properties within this price range at Hungerford. Thame is lovely in east Oxfordshire and has a Waitrose! Wallingford just about comes in on price but Thames side is usually going to increase prices. Schools in these areas are good. These are all attractive towns with good access to countryside. Wantage is cheaper and you would get a detached house. Again plenty to recommend it.

What transport links, if any, do you need? Rail or motorway?
