bathroom and bedroom without walls between bed and toilet

Looking for a House. Have seen one that is interesting. On the top floor (3 floors townhouse) there is one master bedroom and a 'bathroom' but there is no door to the 'bathroom area'. Just a big open space and it would be difficult (but probably possible) to build a wall.

I can see that people who love having a bath might like having a bathtub 'in the bedroom' but isn't it very strange to have a toilet in the middle of a shared bathroom/bedroom area? I have seen complaints about hotel rooms with windows to the bathroom but hadn't seen any houses without bathroom walls.
At least build walls around the toilet! (In this house it's kind of an L-shape so you can't see the toilet from the bed but you can hear...).

What am I missing, what's the advantage?

No, that's bizarre. Toilets should have walls and doors and preferably a window that opens and/or an extraction fan.

Some kind of fetish, it can be the only reason

Twiglets1 · 08/11/2024 14:36

Horrible.

Haha yes, all roads lead back to fetish

As well as a toilet in the room in which I sleep being unleasant, wouldn't a separate dressing room be necessary too? So clothes don't get damp from steam

LividSquid · 08/11/2024 14:44

I have this.

I also thought it was weird at first.

But I love it.

Side note: I shall never take another husband, so it's easier to love alone.

Other side note: not at all damp. Room is large and I keep it well ventilated. Can't stand clammy rooms.

carsoncity · 08/11/2024 14:48

Glad to see that I'm not the only one who finds this odd :-/

@LividSquid If you're the only one who will ever sleep there and use it, I can see that it's not a massive issue. Still can't see why it's a preference to see the toilet more often than necessary though. What is it you actually love about it?

Urgh I wouldn't buy it unless I could build a wall. Bad enough sharing a normal bathroom with DH sometimes never mind an open plan en suite! 😂

LividSquid · 08/11/2024 14:53

@carsoncity Well, it came with the house and it for a number of reasons was the house I could afford.

Choice between one toilet in the house or two and the second is in your bedroom? Not a question for me! I have an overactive bladder and all the rest. Means I can walk three steps in the night and not have to wake up as much.

The bath is a large roll top luxury type one, much nicer to soak in than the tiny utilitarian downstairs bath I bath my DC in.

I assumed I'd need to buy some sort of screen or massive plant to screen off the loo, but honestly I don't notice it any more as being weird, it's just convenient. No weirder than having a tiny cramped en suite and leaving the door open, and it genuinely isn't damp because of the size and ventilation in the room.

Should I ever break my current vow of chastity I might have to insist it isn't used in public, though. And if I ever sell the house I'll mention that you could put a stud wall in if you felt strongly enough.

Hoppinggreen · 08/11/2024 14:57

Only way I would consider it would be if I lived alone

carsoncity · 08/11/2024 15:34

@LividSquid I can absolutely see that it makes sense in your situation :-) I was just wondering if it's something you would prefer, and it doesn't sound like you would necessarily prefer it, unless the alternative is no second loo for example :-)

The house I'm looking at could definitely have had a large spacious bathroom and a sizeable bedroom even if there were a wall though :-/ So for these sellers maybe it's a fetish :-9 :-)

I am constantly on Rightmove, and see this more and more. Mostly it seems to be in the context of a listed house though, where you can't justt spilt up a room

sprigatito · 08/11/2024 16:02

In-cell sanitation.

KnickerlessParsons · 08/11/2024 16:14

Is it even legal?

Feelingstrange2 · 08/11/2024 16:18

I've stayed in a hotel room where the bathroom was separated by a half wall of glass blocks, and no door. So not entirely dissimilar.

I was staying on my own and it was quite practical. But I'd not like to share it like that.

carsoncity · 08/11/2024 16:26

@Sandwichgen Ah interesting! I'm not much on rightmove so had missed that it's common :-) This is not a listed building but wondering if there's an impression that it's posh perhaps?

Not sure why it wouldn't be legal!?

We have that on our top floor! Well toilet is sort of in a blocked off corner but there's no door and the shower is in the chimney breast. It's so weird, I can only assume they did it for space reasons so they could fit a big room plus a study. They could have put a whole en suite in. We don't really use the toilet anyway, it's just there. But odd. A few houses on our road have similar apparently.

Same here. But we were celebrating our anniversary! Utterly bizarre. I spent way too much time that weekend looking for a suitable loo in the public areas.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 08/11/2024 18:25

Does the floorplan lend itself to being able to put in a stud wall and door to properly separate the loo and the bed at least? I would like a bedroom with the toilet in the same room. We have an ensuite that had no door when we bought the house. We put one in.

Fizbosshoes · 08/11/2024 18:35

There was a thread quite recently about this kind of set up becoming more popular in hotels. Nearly everyone on the thread hated it.

It's a definite no from me

TizerorFizz · 08/11/2024 22:52

We have an opaque glass wall. Separated our en suite bathroom from the passageway to the bedroom. So not exactly an adjacent loo but a glass “wall” does work but our loo doesn’t face the bedroom area. I would also look at partial stud wall and partial glass. Glass stops areas being claustrophobic. Hotel bedrooms have baths but rarely a loo in the bedroom!

Almost £1.5 mill and you can see your bed as you shit. https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/151050215#/?channel=RES_BUY

I do wonder if it’s to stop men locking themselves away for a 20 minute shit though

There's also a sauna in the master bedroom.
