We've lived in our house for 6 years, it is our first home.
It took us over a year to find out that our council tax band is higher than every single house in our street (except 1!)
I know - we should have looked into it earlier but it never crossed our minds! Hindsight is a wonderful thing eh?!
I think the reason it's higher is because the previous owners had a disabled daughter, so the house was modified for her - they added a lift, tracking, wet room etc (but did not extend or make the house larger) - so much so that I believe it counted as a separate dwelling, so when we bought it put us into the higher band.
As I said, we didn't realise at the time, and when we did and called up (in Covid times) we were told that we'd have to provide evidence of about 5 other homes to challenge our band - realistically how can we do that?! Can't exactly knock our neighbours to ask for their blueprints can we?!
So we have basically put up with it since. Tonight I was speaking with an estate agent who encouraged us to challenge it again.
Anyone had any luck with it?
I think I will try it from the angle of "the house has changed" - it's no longer 2 separate dwellings. Granted, we have since put an extension on it, but surely that would affect the next people who own our house, not us?
Any informed advice VERY much appreciated.
We are in Wales if that makes any difference!
