How can I fix bubbling lining paper? [pic]

Hi. I am looking to paint our study. I had ridiculous quotes for this to be done professionally and I just cannot being myself to pay that money so here I am! The walls are covered in lining paper which is intact in most areas but there’s this small area here where it’s bubbling. I dont want to reline it so I am thinking sanding it off and plastering over the sanded then paint as normal? Thoughts! Thank you 😙

I would be looking for signs of water ingress. You need to fix the reason it's bubbling.

"plastering over it"? Are you good at plastering?

Singleandproud · 10/11/2024 17:43

Do you mean poly filling, sanding then papering. I don't think you mean plastering, that's a big job and needs a professional.

I would remove that piece of lining and investigate underneath and reline it personally.

If you are confident there isn't an issue you can stab a hole to remove the air and attempt to flatten and adhere it to the walls etc but chances are it would look rubbish and only some sturdy 80s style anaglypta will cover it properly.

Tbh I don’t think you’ll get that looking any good with the method you’ve suggested, it’ll look patchy at best. It looks like it’s just been put on badly- mainly not enough paste in the areas that are bubbling. Probably least crap way of bodging it (sorry, just being honest) would be to get a Stanley knife, slice the paper along the edge of the raised bits so you can fold it open, get some paste in there and re stick.

The proper way of doing it is to get it all off and do those walls again. Not expensive if you do it yourself but obviously pricey if you’re paying someone.

It’s coming off the wall for a reason. You need to find the reason and cure that first. Or any remedial work will be ruined too.

Honest opinion? Do a quick fix and it won't look good.

You need to fix the leak or whatevers caused it, then take of the affected strips, recline that area, then paint. Although if you want a nice finish, I would remove the whole lining paper and either paint the wall or arrange it to be plastered then paint.

It's annoying how expensive everything is these days.

My ex could plaster but it’s a very messy and difficult job that’s normally given to a tradesman. We took off wall paper in our house and lots of plaster came off too (hence ex plastering ) - taking off the paper could do the same to your walls too. Are you handy ?

You need to work out why it’s bubbling. I assume there’s excess moisture or something and not sorting that will result in the remedial work bubbling again.

Looking at the pattern of how it’s become detached, it looks like a simple case of the paper hasn’t been pasted correctly. It just hasn’t adhered in that corner and is likely due to not enough paste. The paper never truly bonds to the surface behind and over time, due to moisture in the air will crinkle and bubble up. I see this all the time on the decorating jobs I’ve done, particularly behind or around radiators.

If it’s truly a case of water ingress then you need a source for that; I would guess there isn’t one in this case here by looking at the picture.

So the owner just left it like this? I’m suspicious of lined walls. Usually something is concealed but until the paper is off, who knows? The op could always slice it open in the corner and try repasting the bubbling paper. It might be stretched and not easy to smooth out though.
