Kitchen reno/ building work where to start?

For ages DH and I have been thinking of knocking down the wall between our kitchen and dining room to make a big kitchen/ diner which would be more practical as DC grow, because both rooms are fairly narrow. Neighbours have done this and it looks good.

At same time, we'd like the kitchen reconfigured because washing machine, sink and dishwasher are together next to the back door, in a very narrow impractical space.

But.....DH has an idea that we keep the wall and instead get some kind of modern conservatory attached to the kitchen and use that as a dining area. We can't seem to agree. I feel that with his idea we will just end up with three small rooms and the original issue will remain.

What we'd like, before making any decisions, is to get some advice on how to best utilise the space we have and to advise on the different possibilities and rough costs of the different options. We need someone creative who can see how the space could best be used because we aren't good at this stuff!

At this stage do we need a builder or an architect? I feel like a builder isn't necessarily going to sit down and consider all the possible options. However, our budget is low and I'm guessing that service from an architect would cost a couple of thousand, and it also feels like a small job for an architect.

Where should we start? Thank you

Just to add we aren't interested in an extension- can't afford it and it would take away the character of the house.

Find an Architetural technician in your area. Cheaper than an architect and more suited to smaller un complicated projects. I used a local FB site to get recommendations. As an aside I would steer away from a conservatory for all the obvious reasons, cold in winter, hot in summer etc etc

Thanks @Sanch1 I'd not heard of them.....Will they do drawings? Thanks

If you think an extension would ruin the character of your house I don’t see how a conservatory is any better tbh.

I'm not keen on conservatory either but DH is. I doubt we will go down that road tbh

Drawings, planning, building regs, construction drawings, less 'fancy' than an architect 😂
