Garden direction / Sun (diagram)

Im having a bit of a thick day, so need your help please

A, B, C and D are blocks of two houses. The green is their back gardens.
I've put in accurate compass directions.
I've got myself confused about 'north facing gardens', 'south facing gardens' etc. because a family member asked "doesn't it depend on which way you're looking when you're standing in the garden?" 🙈 I am easily confused!
Which one, or more, of these are the best in terms of amount of sunlight in the garden, please and thank you

B and C are southwest and southeast facing. C gets more morning sun and B gets more evening sun.

A and D are north-west and northeast facing so will be shadier.

The height of the houses and the surrounding buildings are also a factor.

BlunderMifflin · 30/10/2024 15:09

Thank you @SnakesAndArrows
That's so clear!
The houses are standard two-storey semis. Nothing else around them as it's a new estate being built.

Not sure if I have this correct so do check and hopefully other people will come along and also add their comments.
A is North West Facing so you should start to get the sun mid afternoon onwards.

B. Is South West so will get the sun from early afternoon onwards.

C. Is South East facing so will get the sun from early morning to mid afternoon.

D. is North East facing so gets sun early morning to early afternoon.

However if the garden are not tiny postage stamps gardens and with other buildings/trees then somewhere in the garden you will get the sun in you move around.
If you want sun in the garden for the most of the day then B facing South East maybe your best option.
I hope I have that correct.

LindaDawn · 30/10/2024 15:17

MISTAKE SORRY

correction should say B IS SOUTH WEST.

Also the above is if no tall buildings, trees etc and of course in the winter the sun is lower and that affects how much sun.

i see I have posted the same as SnakesandArrows so am right.

Thank you @LindaDawn so it looks like B and C are the best ones. Good to know! I knew I'd get a clear answer on here. I'm not sure how I got so confused about it 😂

It’s always best to double check these things anyway. It’s such an important thing in a house. And yes B and C are the best ones. If you like sitting out in the garden late afternoon and especially in the evening then B South West is your best bet. Or if you like to sit out and have a breakfast cuppa onwards then C South East is better.

LindaDawn · 30/10/2024 15:38

To make it more difficult to choose then I always like to work out which main rooms in the house will get the sun too.

if your lounge is at the front of the house then option C should give you sun in the late afternoon/evening. I think that’s nice as you usually use the lounge at night and can enjoy your glass of wine. And if the kitchen is at the back of the house then again option C will get the sun in the morning when you are having breakfast.

LindaDawn · 30/10/2024 15:39

If the houses have multiple windows facing different directions then that is not a huge problem as more chance of sun.

LindaDawn · 30/10/2024 15:41

It may say in the housing sales literature which way the plots are facing too, BUT ALWAYS ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK.

You're not the only one... I've seen many on here say their garden faces in all directions depending on where they're facing 😂

It's where you're facing when you stand with your back to the house, looking down the garden. House B would be my preference here ☺️

LindaDawn · 30/10/2024 18:51

I agree house B would be the best choice.

BlunderMifflin · 30/10/2024 19:32

@LindaDawn great idea to think about windows, yes. I did see one house a while back that very definitely had a north facing garden but the listing said it was south facing!

@CellophaneFlower I'm glad it's not just me! Yes house b is looking the best for this.

Thanks everyone for the help!

As others have said, garden size and surroundings are a factor as well. Our garden is south facing, but because it’s relatively small and surrounded by trees, most of it is in shade for at least half the day. It’s not a problem for us- there’s always a sunny spot and we can move around- but plants can’t, and those that need full sun don’t do well. Also we actually get more sun from October to April, because the tree canopy is sparser or not there at all.

Yes B is the best on the face of it but it depends on what is in the spaces on your drawing

The drawing isn't accurate at all regarding spacing or layout. It's a whole new build estate that isn't actually built yet, I'm just looking at the plan. All of the houses will be semi-detached two storeys and face in one of these four directions.
Some of the gardens are bigger than others with fencing around them.
The row with NW facing gardens will have trees at the back of their gardens, otherwise there's nothing else really there.

BlunderMifflin · 31/10/2024 22:57

Nope I've got that last bit wrong! None of the houses have trees behind their gardens, the trees are actually opposite the front of a row of houses so not near the back gardens.

That’s good that there aren’t tress to block the light for you.
