Removing artificial grass

Anyone removed plastic grass and relaid turf, reseeded? How easy / successful is it?

Not artificial grass but we removed sandstone paving and put grass in. All we did was remove the slabs and sand, add a few inches of topsoil and then laid the turf. Very easy and the grass took just fine.

Could you pull up a discrete corner of the grass and see what's underneath?

Artificial Grass is very difficult to dispose of. As of yet there are no recycling options so very few places will accept it. Cutting it into strips and putting in household rubbish is the only way I have found so far. It's terrible stuff really and should never be put down in the first place.

If it's been put down properly, they will be a layer of sand, followed by a layer of gravel/crushed stone. So you need to figure out what your going to do with that, along with the plastic carpet.

In a similar position, want to take up some sections of mine. Mine has been professionally laid, and when I pulled it up, as someone said above, there is a very substantial layer of sand and crushed stone - it would be too much for me to remove without professional assistance, so I'm going to try just adding a layer of topsoil straight onto it, then rather than traditional lawn I'm going to try a wildflower meadow/grass mix that's designed to thrive in low fertility conditions

You can do it yourself and I have but it's a lot of work. I found Facebook marketplace great as I bagged up tonnes of sand and then tonnes of hardcore. I advertised it all on marketplace and various people collected some of it. The rest I did multiple trips to the tip. When bagging it up keep the bags light. If you want to get rid of the actual artificial grass again advertise it on marketplace. Someone will come and collect it from you. I would wait until spring when people start their own garden projects.

Do properly consider the location as to whether grass will grow. People don't go to the expense and effort of artificial turf without reason. It can make the difference between having a garden or having a quagmire. In our old house the gardens were all small and north facing with massive trees (protected). It meant grass just didn't grow properly.

Putting topsoil on top of the sand/stone sub base won't give a good lawn. It will dry out very quickly in the summer. Best to remove it and replace with good quality topsoil.
