Who pays for the new Toilet?

I had a quote from a local plumber to repair the flush in our toilet - £140 inc VAT. Yesterday they came to do the work but found a problem afterwards. They explained they would need to replace another part, which they would do today for free, if I would pay for the part, which was £10. I agreed.

Today they've been to do the second fix. I paid the £150. But the toilet is now leaking. The toilet has never leaked before. They are saying we will have to pay for a new toilet as it was old and they can't work out why it is now leaking. I'm pretty unimpressed, as the toilet was fine apart from the flush not working correctly. Now I'm forking out for a full brand new toilet!

I think the plumbers should restore us to where we should be, e.g. a working toilet. AIBU?

Neither the guy that did the quote or the one who did the work said that there was a possibility of this outcome. They both said that replacing the flush was a quick job but they had to drain it down, which was why the quote was quite high. I've already paid more than the initial quote but am left without a working toilet (fortunately we have another one upstairs). They have said they will fit it for free but we will have to pay for the toilet and parts, plus wait until they can find time to do it.

Citizens Advice are good for telling you your rights in these types of situations. I don't think waiting for them to "fit you in" is reasonable if the leak is indoors. Who pays for the toilet is tricky. Plumber should claim on their insurance, but insurance firm aren't likely to offer new-for-old.
