Just curious.

If you're house-hunting, what's the top thing that will make you stop looking at a listing and move on straight away?

For me, it's unequal bedroom sizes. We're looking at 4-beds and there are SO many that have one absolutely massive room, two decent sized doubles and one tiny box room. ARRGHH.

We have 3 dc and don't want to put one in a 7x6 box whilst the other two enjoy large double rooms. It's an absolute deal breaker for us and as soon as I see huge disparity in bedroom sizes it's 'FFS next' no matter how good the rest of the house is (unless the walls upstairs could be easily reconfigured which they usually can't).

Busy road, houses too tightly packed into an area. No hall. Too many bedrooms squeezed in. Kitchen in lounge. Not enough living space to sleeping space.

Farmgoose · 23/10/2024 21:09

En suites in general. Who wants a shitter opening into their bedroom?
Modern houses are tiny and give up too much space to bathrooms.

PebbleSky · 23/10/2024 21:12

I agree re loads of en suites. A house we looked at was 5 bed 5 ensuite with no house bathroom, but the ensuites were mainly all tiny and lightless. I'd prefer a decent house bathroom with a good window.

Twiglets1 · 23/10/2024 21:16

Busy roads.
Bathrooms without windows.
Agree about Purple Bricks & tiny box rooms.

Heronwatcher · 23/10/2024 21:20

Busy road (cats/ noise sensitive)
No grass in garden (including plastic grass, hate it)
large eyesore nearby, like a pylon, sewage plant etc
I can live with most things in a property but I am a bit put off where a period property has been blandwashed (think UPVC, fake panelling, fireplaces/ cornices removed, really modern kitchen) simply because I now know how much cost/ hassle it is to put back in.

Our house has a tiny porch. The front door pretty much opens into the sitting room, which is open plan to the dining room which has the stairs off it 😨
The kitchen is small and closed off with no external window - the only window is into the conservatory. We mostly use the downstairs shower room over the upstairs bathroom because the upstairs bathroom is rubbish.
It didn't tick so many boxes but when we walked in I fell in love with it.
Especially if you like old houses, you need to leave prejudice behind when you're house hunting. The house that's right for you may not be right on paper but I've never regretted buying or renting the houses I fell in love with when I viewed them. Very much if you know you know

Bodeganights · 23/10/2024 21:42

Oddly enough similar to you all.
I've just found a house I love, but the garage has been integrated into the house, leaving a super odd shaped room. Think one corner cut off triangle. I wont link because I might buy it yet. But I'll have to remake a garage if i do buy it.
But itll be a proper sized garage, with a pit and plenty of space for a car and shelving etc.
You'd think for 400k and a decent size house they would leave the garage alone.

Also the Garage in the house. I've seen a few 3 storey houses with the garage in the bottom floor. I can't even imagine how frustrating it would be if every morning the garage door is opened, how loud will it be,will it wake me up every day not to mention entering the house at the side and going up stairs just to get into your house. Loads of these have been built near me in recent years. And often they dont look big enough to hold a car, but also no parking nearby.
Tbf I'm looking for a bungalow rather than two or three storey houses. But the idea is maddening to me.

The major lack of parking in so many estates. I've seen some absolutely tiny houses. I mean new build here, some not much wider than my outstretched arms. And some with just a single brick wall between semis. The sound must travel, and adding acoustic materials to prevent sound will make your tiny house even smaller.

And I currently live in a 30s semi, not renowned for soundproofing, but still there is a double brick wall between semis.

Tiny living rooms. No natural grass in the garden. No storage. Not much side space/cupboards in the kitchen. No downstairs toilet. Brightly coloured carpets/walls. I don't particularly like wallpaper either. I could tolerate a bit but not loads. I also don't like stand alone ovens. I want inbuilt ones. Wouldn't want a property without off street parking (Driveway or garage) either as I'd be worried someone would crash into my car. Wouldn't want fireplaces/log burners. This post has made me realise how fussy I am 😂

Skunkaniseed · 23/10/2024 21:46

Open plan, even worse if there is no way to shut off the kitchen. I like walls, hallways and doors.

abracadabra1980 · 23/10/2024 21:48

Initially, no kerb appeal.
Secondly, 1930's-1980's houses.

PebbleSky · 23/10/2024 21:53

@Be4thedawn exactly. Our current house is really old (listed) and the main door opens straight into the living room. You'd not choose that on paper but it's such an amazing house you just live with the quirks.

Saschka · 23/10/2024 22:12

Conversions with a downstairs toilet added to a cupboard under the stairs (or cupboard anywhere).

Remodelled kitchens where whoever designed it clearly forgot about the appliances - I have seen washing machines in the garden, fridge and freezer in the (separate) garage (and no it wasn’t an additional one, it was the only fridge, I opened all the kitchen cupboards expecting to find an integrated one and there wasn’t one).

Some old shed marketed as a “garden office”, when it clearly isn’t even watertight let alone suitable to work in.

Fake grass

LaPalmaLlama · 23/10/2024 22:36

I’m with the OP on uneven bedrooms- actually saw one where “bedroom 4” was actually a gun room complete with reinforced double door and racks 🤣🤣🤣.

I don’t mind a downstairs bedroom if it’s a spare and situated sensibly ( not off the kitchen).

WhitneyBaby · 23/10/2024 22:38

Rooms leading into other rooms.

pasta · 23/10/2024 22:40

Front door straight into sitting room. Busy road.

Ketzele · 23/10/2024 22:48

My house is on a busy road, and the front door opens straight into the living room which is also my office and bedroom and contains two sets of stairs. I have a tiny paved garden which is overlooked on all sides. There is no garage, no en suite, and no window in the bathroom.

I'm going to have to live here forever, aren't I?!

WhitneyBaby · 23/10/2024 22:50

You will escape one day, I did my 12 year stint living near a busy road and now every day is a blessing.

It won’t be an easy sale but if you price it realistically, it will sell. After all, you bought it!

BettyBardMacDonald · 24/10/2024 04:47

En-suites. No thanks to toilets near beds.

Any bathroom that lacks a window.

North-facing garden.

Fosterfloof · 25/10/2024 03:47

Excessively large kitchen where you have to walk a mile from one side of the kitchen to another. It is obvious in some houses where the kitchen has been designed by someone who had never unloaded the dishwasher or did the slightest bit of cooking!!!

UpTheMagicFarawayTree · 25/10/2024 04:18

Open plan and integrated garages.
I like smallish cosy houses, with different rooms for each thing.

OnlyMurdersInTheBuilding · 25/10/2024 04:37

Any shared land e.g driveway with a neighbour. I want it to be completely private.
Pylons or similar eyesores like industrial estates.
Plastic grass or no grass at all.
Doors that open straight onto a road with no frontage.
My biggest peeve was walking through bedrooms to get to other bedrooms. When buying, we looked at a lot of old houses where this was a thing but no hope of reconfiguring. Absolute deal breaker for me.

Hugmorecats · 25/10/2024 04:46

Oh dear my house has a lot of things people on here hate - only one toilet, sloping front garden, no driveway. Despite that I love it!

I looked at a house that had a shared garden. Your neighbours could walk through it to get to theirs. Said no to that.

On a Busy main road

No green/nature I hate plastic grass and slabs everywhere!

I was thinking of the worse thing. I agree stairs in the living room. Awful
