Viewing house with vendors all there

I viewed a house this morning and the woman’s kids were all still in bed - she showed me the garden and the living areas and kitchen and downstairs loo and then I couldn’t see the bathroom as someone was showering and then while I’m in the master bedroom (which she hadn’t even bothered to make the bed in)

her son came out topless with towel round his waist - we went in to view a steamy bathroom with dirty towels all over the floor

then she starts knocking on the daughters room and she wouldn’t open it told us to go away 😄

I’ve never experienced something like this before it was so strange - is this kind of thing normal!

oh and they want 750k for this house and she can’t even be bothered to try make it nice

No and I'm sure you know it isn't.

MiraculousLadybug · 19/10/2024 16:50

No not normal at all! Is it being sold via an estate agent or somewhere like Purple Bricks? It doesn't sound like she actually wants to sell the house!

Fupoffyagrasshole · 19/10/2024 16:53

It was through kings estate agent and the guy was with me! I did start laughing when we left and said it was a bit weird and he mailed me later asking did I want a second viewing with my husband !

I don’t

the woman is keen to sell she said she’s moving back to Jamaica soon !
only I spoke to her I would have assumed she was renting it or something and didn’t want it to sell

I had something very similar on a viewing.
Mum and adult daughter present and we had to wait for her to come out of the bathroom before we could view the top floor.

Made even worse by the fact that there were 4 other families viewing at the same time.
It was carnage and I wasn't prepared for that to be how viewings are carried out!

This.

Jeez! We had a viewing once where the estate agent kept us waiting for 10+ minutes then rocked up late, told us there was a great dane in the property, then asked if we minded viewing with the dog in the house. We said no as great danes are huge and we had no idea if it was trained etc.

She went into the property to put the dog in the garden, and then we could clearly hear her on the phone for over 20 minutes to someone, we were about to just get in the car and go home when she came back out and said "sorry I can't get the dog to go outside" and we had to view this bloody house with a massive dog jumping up us and barking. The house was filthy inside, like black patches on the wall at the top of the bed from unwashed hair, mould around the windows etc. Like yours, it was someone keen to sell to move abroad quickly. We didn't put an offer in because the house was a disappointment inside anyway. To top it off, the EA was a pushy sales type. We couldn't get out fast enough!

I thought that had to be the worst possible house viewing but yours definitely tops it! Good luck with your future viewings, I'm sure your perfect house is out there. 🏡

What do you think they would be like to deal with as vendors?. It would have to be a Blenheim for £2k before I would touch it.

Imaginatrix · 19/10/2024 17:41

As a former valuer for an estate agents I can confirm that this isn’t normal but far from unusual. Oh you can’t look in that room as someone is asleep, you can look in the bathroom when they’ve finished, people in their pj’s while you’re there or thankfully a very rare one people half dressed while talking to you. Grim.

NormaLouiseBates · 19/10/2024 17:51

That's insane behaviour. We viewed a rental recently that could have given the latest series of "Hoarders next door" a run for their money. It was absolutely filthy and they asked us to take our shoes off when we came in. The entire family were there and followed us and the agent around the entire time. Couldn't wait to get out of there!

Fupoffyagrasshole · 19/10/2024 18:10

I viewed a second property after it wasn’t as bad at all but the guy was just sitting on his sofa watching his laptop ! Everywhere else I’ve viewed the vendors have always been out.
I’m just shocked people think they can just expect 700k upwards and not make an effort

when we had people view our flat I spent the whole day before cleaning the place and had the kids room set up perfectly, our office space near and tidy, living room nice and cosy with a scented candle lit etc

When I sold my last house I showed a family round while me and DD were home, but I'd run around like a mad person tidying and hoovering just before they came and DD was sitting quietly on the sofa watching a film which their little boy happily joined in with so his parents could have a good look around. I wouldn't buy a house unless I'd seen every room.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 19/10/2024 18:19

She also seemed fairly confident I’d be back for second viewing with husband so said you can see it next time !

i will not be back!!

In my area it’s normal for the vendors to be the ones showing people around but it’s usually only the adults who are present.

Dillydollydingdong · 19/10/2024 18:26

We're using Kings to sell our house but not for 700K so it's not ours.

downthebackofthesettee · 19/10/2024 18:29

I once viewed a flat for a second time and took my DM to ask her opinion. The flat was very untidy and the vendor, a young single bloke, spent the entire viewing laid on the settee watching TV and said "I'll leave you to it"!
I bought the flat.

dunroamingfornow · 19/10/2024 18:30

I had something similar once and the estate agent confessed it was a forced sale as the children were turning 18. The toilet was filthy 🤢 as was the kitchen and the vendor couldn't wait to tell me how bad the traffic and parking was. Clearly did not want to sell.

fluffiphlox · 19/10/2024 18:32

Years ago, friends of mine viewed a house and the lady of the house was sitting up in bed as they were shown around by the agent. Not ill by all accounts, just idle and rather odd.

LaPalmaLlama · 19/10/2024 18:59

That sort of thing was quite normal during the mega property boom years- there was not much staging or tidying going on and everything still went for offers over. My friend bought a house where he hadn't seen two of the bedrooms as they were occupied by adult children and had locks on the door. He knew the dimensions as seen other houses in the terrace. When I was looking in 2003 unmade beds and washing up in the sink were pretty normal sights.

AgreeableDragon · 19/10/2024 20:03

Not quite in the same league, but I viewed a house recently with an EA; no vendor present. . It was very clean and tidy, nothing out of place. So the mobile phone left on the side table was very weird. I'm pretty sure they were recording us!

HeddaGarbled · 19/10/2024 20:08

Well, no, it’s not normal, but it’s not really her fault her kids were being arsey. Poor woman.

Wow - this is ridiculous - but it does happen! Surely, if they wanted to sell the house then they’d be out. I guess it primes down to the requirements of the EA too. We were asked if it’d be okay if we were ‘out’ when viewings took place. We didn’t mind - we’d usually park up the road and sit in the car or go to the supermarket and do a shop…

If I was the EA, I’d be pretty pissed off with the vendor, they’re trying to sell the house for them and then they have the vendors relatives in there having showers/refusing access to bedrooms…

I wish them luck in a sale….

good96 · 19/10/2024 22:36

And also with dogs - it really goes without saying that they shouldn’t be in the house..

SpidersAreShitheads · 20/10/2024 04:10

We had some of this when we were buying 😂😂😂

Weird vendors all sat right in the living room - a huge family - which made it very squashed for us to traipse in with the estate agent to view. They just sat and stared at us 😂😂😳

Pushy owners who showed us round the house and hadn’t cleared up. Wanted to point out really trivial bits of work they’d done in great detail but failed to mention the house had been underpinned and was partially non-standard construction.

And then the house where someone was still in bed so we couldn’t see the main bedroom and one of the rooms downstairs was being used for someone WFH.

But this was during the property boom a couple of years back - any old shite was flying off the shelf back then!

HellsBalls · 20/10/2024 06:43

Why not take a second viewing midweek when the kids will be at school?

Footle · 20/10/2024 07:40

One house we viewed was memorable for a large turd floating in the loo.
