Mist coat advice for previously painted but now bare plaster

Hi - hoping someone in the know can give me some advice please!

I know you need to apply a mist coat to new plaster, but what about plaster that has been in situ for 10 years & previously painted, but is currently bare? Do I need to mist coat again or can I just go for it with the emulsion?
Thanks

How did it get ‘bare’? Has it been stripped with a commercial stripper ? Or sanded?

If it is completely without any covering, I would certainly use a mist coat ( this is just an easy way of sealing the plaster so the top coat goes on more smoothly). I often use a dilute coat of the final emulsion first anyway, it makes the paint go on more efficiently even on a painted surface.

If it's been previously painted it's not bare as such - ie the brown plaster colour? If it's previously painted I'd just crack on with a good quality paint - unless you are going from a dark colour to a light one in which case a base coat would be better otherwise I can make your new paint colour look a bit off

@Allthegoodnamesarechosen removed with a manual scraper tool. It’s a relatively small area in an upstairs bedroom that had a little bit of mould on the paint due to being behind a wardrobe & on an external wall. We treated the paint with mould remover but it damaged the surface & just to be sure it’s all completely gone decided it best to scrape the paint off back to bare plaster. The plaster is all in good condition beneath & free of mould & not damp.

Apply a mist coat. Just use whatever emulsion you’re going to use and dilute it by about 25%.

I've recently been using a paint you can put directly on to plaster - Johnstone's Matt Emulsion. It's absolutely brilliant.

They'll mix any colour for you too - saves buggering about with mist coats. I can't

B&Q also do a new plaster paint. We have new plaster for the entire of our downstairs plus an extension and some new plaster upstairs so have a lot of painting to do!

I hate the mess that a mist coat makes because it’s so bloody drippy! This new plaster emulsion is much easier to apply as a base coat. Also comes in big tubs and is pretty cheap so it’s ideal as the first coat.
