Living next door to a graveyard

Found what looks like a lovely house online (ticks all our boxes)... BUT it is next door to a burial site (developed old church building now flats is next door but the churchyard/burial site remains. My first thoughts are "creepy", but a few friends have said it wouldn't bother them... curious to know if anyone has lived next to a burial/churchyard, or dismissed a property because of this?

It’s the living you need to worry about.

MiddleagedBeachbum · 17/10/2024 08:14

I’d love this, I love church’s and graveyards!

LaPalmaLlama · 17/10/2024 08:14

I wouldn't care about the graveyard (insert joke about quiet neighbours) , but I'd be concerned about it being a teen hangout if it's got public access (i.e. not part of the property of the flats)

webuiltthiscityonrockandwheat · 17/10/2024 08:14

I worked as a nanny in a house next to a graveyard and it never bothered me. You could only really see the graveyard from the kitchen window. The only thing I found a bit unsettling was when there was an open grave waiting for a funeral, I'm not sure why though!

TooManyNiblings · 17/10/2024 08:14

I lived in a rented property that overlooked a cemetery and it was fine. No bother from residents (!) and only open to visitors in daylight hours. Nothing scary ever happened either.

EveryDayisFriday · 17/10/2024 08:15

Nice and quiet, what's not to love?

Twiglets1 · 17/10/2024 08:15

Wouldn’t bother me at all.

SquirrelSoShiny · 17/10/2024 08:16

I'd find it quite atmospheric especially if it has old graves.

Keroppi · 17/10/2024 08:16

Great neighbours.
Would people use it as a path to walk through? Are there benches etc?

Used to live near a historic old graveyard. Used to get some teens smoking weed/messing around occasionally but otherwise lovely to live next to. Quiet and pretty. No spookiest- I'm knocked out asleep by 9pm so no time to ghost hunt lol

Duckinglunacy · 17/10/2024 08:17

I think one of the things that makes graveyards ‘creepy’ is that they are naturally quiet places - the stillness can be unnerving, and the quietness means that some, depending on the area, attract unwanted activity (things that others don’t want interrupted generally). The quietness also means that they are absolute havens for wildlife, which is a massive bonus. We have a Victorian cemetery nearby which is popular with walkers and drug dealers

Geneticsbunny · 17/10/2024 08:18

Noone will be able to build on it and you get lots of wildlife and probably nicer views. I would see it as a benefit.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 17/10/2024 08:21

I used to live backing onto a cemetery. We would take a cup of tea over and sit on a bench because it was beautiful and had amazing views. One of my young nieces called it "the village of the dead people" 😊

(Totally freaked out one of our cats though!)

GreengrassofW · 17/10/2024 08:22

Sounds lovely to me, peaceful. i'd be concerned about security though if it's in London

ARichtGoodDram · 17/10/2024 08:24

We lived next to the graveyard for years. I miss it now as it was so quiet and peaceful.

Very very occasionally if there was a very large funeral car parking in our street would be a pain, but that was rare and it was never for very long.

If it's still in use then it's never going to built over in our lifetimes.

Needanewname42 · 17/10/2024 08:25

Dead quiet 🤫 neighbours.
I'd be fine with it.

NewNameNoelle · 17/10/2024 08:26

I grew up next to a churchyard. Very peaceful, sometimes I used to walk in there for some quiet. I got to ‘know’ the graves closest to the house and would say hello as I passed.

TheDandyLion · 17/10/2024 08:27

You know they're not going to build there.

Itsthecatsfault · 17/10/2024 08:27

We’ve sold our house backing on to cemetery (not because of the cemetery I hasten to add!). Some people found it a bit off-putting (one cancelled a viewing because they didn’t realise it was there) and I was a bit disconcerted at first.

overtime we realised it gave us a green space visible from the house (it’s old and has lots of gorgeous established trees) and no chance of ever having someone build up to the fence/overlooking the garden.

TickingAlongNicely · 17/10/2024 08:28

I'd be worried about the potential for it being used for drugs etc, rather than the graves themselves.

(Our rental property is next to an undertaker. Apparently it does deter a lot of tenants... but attracts others!)

woebetide8 · 17/10/2024 08:29

The church was a Chapel and the burial site is small, but hasn't been used for decades (no funerals held there any more as the Chapel is now flats). There doesn't appear to be any public access, no gates or paths through it...

Yes thats a minor worry of mine too, but I wouldn't let it put me off completely

That is a very good point!

Well in that case, it wouldn't bother me at all! I'd find it interesting reading the headstones and wondering about the lives of the people that were laid to rest there.

AgileGreenSeal · 17/10/2024 08:35

It will be lovely and quiet.
