Removal companies 200+ miles

I've done a Google search but wondering what are the best companies to use?
Is there a comparison site type thing to use as well?

200+ miles, do not need packing services, just the loading, transfer and unloading.

Currently aimlessly clicking on different companies.

Not an imminent move, I was thinking £1500 for the removals, husband thinking more like £3K.

Any thoughts?
Thanks

Find an independent company close to where you currently live is my advice.

Ask a few for quotes. We asked pickfords etc thinking a big company would be best for a long distance move but actually they came out more expensive and we got really good service.

We had to move out before our new house was ready so had to put stuff in storage, much easier if your removals are local.

Depending on how big your house is/ how much stuff you have, your DH is likely to be more accurate.

Ours was 4k for full packing of a 4 bed house, a weeks storage and a 150 mile move.

Thanks for your advice.
Think I'll get a few quotes locally in that case.

And sorry forgot to add - 2 bed flat.

Not a long distance move, but son moved a month ago about 15 miles, 2 bed flat plus patio full of pots, 1300 using local firm, Pickfords quoted 1700. So I'd expect minimum 1500 for long distance.

Could you hire a big van and move the stuff yourselves??? Would it be cheaper??

good96 · 12/10/2024 22:49

Relatives paid £2k to move just over 200 miles from Birmingham to Launceston in Cornwall.
Moving all the contents from a 3 bed house.

Getting a number of quotes is definitely key!

That was back in 2021 during COVID… so relatives had to completely social distance!

Mine was 5k for a four bed house to move 280 miles, including packing.
However, be careful because the companies sometimes sub contract the job to another company. The van that turned up was for a different company. I read the T’s and C’s carefully and it was stated that they can do that.
It was fine in the end, but just be aware.

We just moved 300 miles from a 3 bed to a 4 bed. Couldn't get any quotes for under £4k because of the distance as there's rules on driving time, fuel costs etc.
We couldn't afford it so did it ourselves. Luckily DH is a lorry driver, but it still cost us nearly £2k including fuel. Two trips in two trucks. However we had a garage and a storage unit as well (workshop stuff, motorbikes and camping gear).

Purplepepsi · 13/10/2024 08:24

It cost us £2.1k to move a 3 Bed house 0.5 miles!!! Would have been £1.6k without the packing. Our other quotes were £3k and £4k!

We moved similar distance but four bed house plus garage/shed contents. Got three quotes that came in between £3.5 and £4.5k for full packing service plus move. Went with the cheapest quote and regretted it as they were cheaper as hadn't allowed enough time and were very slapdash.

The £3.5k quote was for a 3 day move, the £4.5k was 4 day (the third quote came inbetween the two) and with hindsight we wished we'd looked at the proposed schedule in more detail.

Ok great thank you. I'm sensing £3k is more likely we'll aim for that.
But plenty of quotes sound sensible.
Had thought about doing lots of little trips taking a few boxes up every so often and storing at family but by the time you do that fuel money adds up anyway.
And then furniture wise, we'd have to hire a Luton van at the very least which neither of us or none of the family are legal to drive. So I think that might be out.
Few bits to think about but thanks for the advice!!
