What's your opinion on distance wall to door?

I'm having bifolds to the garden. I've only seen today what the internal distance from the wall is and I'm worried I will dislike not having more room in the corners for floor lamps, curtains, little tables etc. I knew the door width but when I saw it the other day stupidly hadn't quite factored in quite how far inwards the internal bricks come and narrowseach side.

I might be being totally silly and that's the whole POINT of bifold doors.

It's early enough on the brickwork I'm not petrified of asking them to make the aperture narrower if its by a half or whole brick length.

The doors themselves aren't off the shelf so I'm not stressing about standard sizes...

See pic but 3m doors and 35cm either side at the moment.

Any opinions or feedback from past experience would be massively appreciated!!!

TIA!

Is that not the standard required depth to support the beam above OP? Otherwise you might need picture frame beams instead?

We have bifold doors and I really wanted curtains. There's not much space at the end but we have special rails and hooks so they fold up really tight when open. Works well.

The distance looks fine to me,enough space to have a plant or lamp if you want. However, if it’s on the door folding side they will be in the way and you won’t want them there.

I have full width sliding doors in one room and don’t miss having a wall corner, They do have internal blinds so no curtains to worry about.

Also, I know your windows are bespoke size, but haven’t they already been ordered? Changing dimensions can be costly and lead to long delays.

I think it looks fine
Curtains sometimes don't work that well with bifolds - built in blinds may be better

This is one thing I wish I had realised about bifolds when we did ours as I really do miss having corner space and in hindsight I would have had one less pane so I could have more wall.

Have wall lights in the corners, but get the electrics done quickly, before the walls are plastered, so it doesn’t become a more costly job.

A side table will be about 45cm and a normal kitchen cabinet around 60cm. Built in seating is about 65cm but sofas can be much deeper. So really depends what you want to put there.

We went for 50 one side and it works well for custom cabinetry and also off the shelf furniture. I think if you’ve got any plans to put furniture on one side then definitely leave 50 for safety

Scampuss · 13/10/2024 14:07

Worth noting that there will be even less space once it's plastered.

Thanks so much everyone for feedback. I've decided I definitely do want more wall so now I'm deciding whether I want 0.5 brick extra or full brick (offset ofc so in half-brick options for rejigging laying)

And thanks for the reminder about plaster for measurements!!!

My one brick extra gives me 58cm minus plaster and half brick gives me 47 minus plaster. I've dropped a cm somewhere can't quite work out

I'm confident I'm not going to regret whichever I do go with! [Although the architect still thinks I should go for as much door as possible for light but it's going to be my sitting room so wall mounted TV as well as the curtains etc etc I don't think have quite been factored in].

I will still have pretty massive doors. 3m originally become either 2.8 or 2.6. AND I'm having skylights too in a 4m high open pitched roof with the whole room west facing so I'm not exactly worried about feeling cramped or it being dark.

I just have to decide ASAP for the morning!!!

Thanks everyone! I will definitely see any additional nuggets :-) if anyone has any further thoughts
