Is this a normal amount to spend on heating?

DP and I have lived in our current home for 3 years, it is a rented 2 bedroom detached countryside cottage that runs on oil fired central heating.
We are now looking to buy our first home, and friends have told me I am in for a shock with heating costs as in this house ours are apparently unusually low. This is a little daunting to hear.

We get 500L of oil 2x a year, at about £340 a go, so £680 a year, so technically £57 a month (split between two). This also gives us hot water.

Now I'm writing it out, that does seem cheap. We also are not frugal with the heating. Is this a total anomaly and am I in for a reality check if we move?

Well it depends on the size of your house, age of the central heating system and any insulation etc.

My energy bills are £20 gas for heating and hot water and £80 electricity (alot of that will be the shower) but I'm in a small home.

We spend around 20-25 on gas, and 70-90 on electricity. 2 adults and a teenager, 4 bed semi. Lots of devices, and I wfh 3 days a week.

I get about 3 x 1000 tanks every 2 years (dependant on how cold the year is etc, but that's probably average).
4 bed, 3 reception house with Ave 3 people living here.
All heating & hot water, Inc showers, from the oil fired boiler.

It depends on your usage and time of year. We are in a 4 bed in Scotland and in the warmer months gas will be around £30/40 month. When it's colder it can be £120/130.

Electricity for us is another £170/180 month.

Our gas bill in the winter months is about £200 a month more than it is in the summer, so that’s about our heating costs I guess.

GasPanic · 08/10/2024 18:51

Your current prices don't seem outrageous to me.

It depends so much where you are moving to. Small new build the prices could be tiny.

Draughty large old cottage could be huge.

Yellow2024 · 08/10/2024 18:54

That seems really good to me but I think there's just so many variables.

We pay 270 a month. Small 3 bed. 3x WFH days a week and don't worry about putting the heating on.

I really wouldn't worry about it you'll just cope with what ever it costs.

It’s really a how long is a piece of string, a modern well insulated apartment will cost very little, a big detached place with high ceilings in Scotland will cost a fortune. We’re in a modern 4 bed detached with solar panels and a battery but gas central heating, over a year I think we’ll pay about £1000, mostly on gas because our electric export pretty much pays for our import.

Diyextension · 08/10/2024 18:56

There is no normal amount to spend on heating.

some people might have it on 25c , some have it on 15c ?

big house, small house ?

well insulated, no insulation ?

there are too many different factors.

DryBiscuit · 08/10/2024 19:00

Every person is going to be different because house type is so different

tediber · 08/10/2024 19:21

So u still pay electric on top of that though? If that's the case I don't think it will be that bad.

In my old mid terraced 2 bed house I was paying about £60-70 a month for gas and electric but that was 8 yrs ago. I imagine it would be more like £130 for the same house now.
