Toilet won't flush - anything I can do/replace myself?

Hi, I'd be grateful for any ideas that may save me having to call a plumber out. Toilet has stopped flushing. When handle is depressed, it makes a normal "trying to flush" sound (you can here that some water enters the toilet bowl) but it lacks the usual "oomph" and doesn't progress into a full flush.

Occasionally, if pumped up and down vigorously, it will progress into the usual full flush, but mostly it doesn't. If I push down the red ballcock with my hand, the tank fills to a higher level than usual. Depressing the handle after this in the usual way still doesn't cause the full flush to occur, but if the vigorous pumping is done after this (filling the tank higher than usual), it generally will do the full flush.

So obviously not sustainable long term! Any thoughts?

That's really helpful, thank you. I'll give it a go!

Yep, likely a worn out flapper 😂
Any idea how old ? Often they will be worn out after 5 years of heavy work!

Yes, I'm, terrible with this kind if stuff, but I successfully replaced my flapper thingy with some help from YouTube.

For now you can pour a really large amount of water down it, from a height, try and get a “whoosh” and it will push whatever is in the bottom of the loo through the Ubend

Toilets are pretty simple - you can learn quite a lot just by looking at them and making the different bits move and seeing what happens. There are also some useful videos on youtube either how it works type things or fix-it videos.

That looks like a siphon flush. The flush is the bit with the green top. The flappy plastic sheet inside it will have perished. There are YouTubes on how they work ( e g . plumberparts). The cheap way to fix it is to take out the flush and replace the diaphragm with a new one. It's ok to find some thick plastic sheet and cut it to match old one. It's only easy to do if you can take out the box bit of the flush. Hopefully undoing those rings under the green bit will make that possible. For some flushes the whole cistern needs removing which is much more challenging.

You definitely don't need to pay a plumber for this! This happened to my toilet too. I fixed it by googling and watching YouTube tutorials. I can't remember how actually I fixed it, but I remember it being pretty straightforward.

This happened to me too. Fixed with the help of YouTube. Essentially you have to replace the bit that has a green cap. I had to take off cistern which was a faff but I replaced the o ring seal at the same time. The replacement part is better in that it is in two parts so next time it goes you just unclip and replace without having to unscrew bits.
