Loft conversion alcove storage

Am I being crazy if in my loft conversion I get a long curtain fitted across the eaves to store random junk and put clothing on convenient rails without spending a fortune on built ins? Has anyone done this? Did it look odd and was it a dust trap or ok?

Eaves are not like wardrobes, you will need it closed off, with a cupboard door for access. Most people store the usual, luggage, Christmas decs etc. Your loft conversion wouldn't be finished and be left open to the elements if there was no partition. Great access for mice as well.

When mine was done the builder kind of made a cupboard full length of the house eaves but access to it is from the quarter turn on the stairs 3 from the top if that makes sense, so kind of the opposite side to where my bedroom is. He did put a small doorway into it, although you can't fully stand up in it, which i have curtained off to hide all the clutter that you accumulate that doesnt get used all year around like heaters, fans camping gear. It's very useful, bought a cheap clothes rail from ikea which is just behind the opening for easy access. I simply made a curtain out of gingham cotton on a curtain wire attached to the back of the doorframe. It would have been more convenient if the opening had gone all the way but my ensuite goes over the stairs and joins up to it so it couldn't have been fully open. I'd say go for it, if you don't like it you can get cupboards done at a later date.

I meant after it was all finished and plastered not the literal eaves. Oops didn't explain that well. Basically in my loft conversion in my previous house it was just finished and plastered without built ins. There were some toy boxes and other storage in there but it didn't look perfect. I always planned on adding storage but moved. So wants it's finished I meant instead of building in wardrobe storage etc had anyone tried a curtain. We're having a loft conversion company to do the job it's about how to make use of the space as the house footprint is smallish

Thanks @Mossstitch I'm trying to picture that. It's an 1834 railway workers cottage so a bunch of modern built ins wouldn't be in keeping. We're having an en suite too. Just trying to work out how to do it now

Was just about to say its all fully plastered and insulated, definately not open to the elements and no mice in 12 years🙏😂 my house is small and it fully makes use of every square inch like that rather than wasting space with cupboard frames and shelves/doors.

Sounds similar to mine, wish I could draw a diagram but technologically challenged🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️
The house is an old terrace that was a two up two down with the stairs going up the middle between the two rooms so they carried on up with the next set of stairs by taking a piece out of the biggest front bedroom. As it gets near to the top it turns at that point the long cupboard is to the right and 3 more steps to the left go straight into my bedroom. The ensuite door is at the opposite side so that it goes over the new set of stairs.

Sounds a nice idea with the curtain. Can they box in the purlin so that you can put the curtain rail either along the face of it or hung underneath it?

bellamountain · 06/10/2024 09:32

Oh how funny, I thought you meant the literal eaves - that would be different ;)

Pieandchips999 · 06/10/2024 11:37

Ooh @Mossstitch if you could manage any attempt at a diagram or share a photo I would really appreciate it. Understand if not

@bellamountain I was giggling imaging a loft conversion half open to the elements. Like Cinderella's attic 🤣

@DozyBugger I don't think it will have a purlin as it will be a dormer at the back and supported with steels instead. Haven't seen a purlin in a while

Thinking of everyone's ideas I may get some open shelving and rail built in then so the curtain over that

Not at all, I've done the same. Actually used some of those shorter IKEA wardrobes to create a slightly uneven but neater wardrobe within the alcoves.

Theres a lot of ideas out there, depends if you have the time or money, but certainly was a game changer for us. Thinking of redoing it once saved up professionally, but our current setups worked for the last 5 years perfectly, so no, not crazy at all.

Although theres some cool ideas on these sites, quite like the small loft setupo for wardrobes here: www.loftcompare.co.uk/loft-conversion-wardrobes
