How to make best use of my airing cupboard

New property has a walk-in airing cupboard with a water tank and boiler and shelving and gets nicely warm.

Never had an airing cupboard before and wondering how to make best use of it. Any tips from others blessed with an airing cupboard?

I have put a clothes horse in mine. It's great as it means i can hide all the laundry/wet clothes away. And they dry quicker in there.

I would love that. I prioritise bedding and towels but if I had space I would air all the clothes there . I have no drier and still iron a lot so nothing is immediately bone dry a large airing cupboard would mean no plies of washing hanging around. If I still had room I would store spare bedding/ towels/ blankets etc.

No advice but brought back memories of hiding in the airing cupboard when I was a kid and loving the smell of all the freshly laundered towels and bedding!

I used to dry washing on the bottom 2 shelves. Bedding and towels kept on the top 2. However DH said the fact that the cupboard is warm, means we are wasting heat via the pipes, which of course costs a lot of money these days,so the tank has thick lagging and so do all the pipes..I still dry little bits in there like undies, but it takes 24 hours.

Washing in off the line is aired in there, bottom shelves for 24 hours.

In our old house, we put up a rail and hung shirts or things on there.

This house, the airing cupboard is a bit smaller and less shelves, so it is storage for bedding and towels.

Things that seem a bit cold/damp after being on the washing line get put in there overnight.

Mine has rails horizontally on each wall. However, one of the most useful things are large hooks very high up. Fabulous for drying duvet covers, sheets, towels, coats, etc. I have a special 'stick' with a hook on it for getting them up there. I dry nearly everything in there and can't even remember how to use the tumble dry setting on my washing machine.

I also have a dehumidifier in there for days when the heating is off - and obviously it keeps the moisture level down in their with wet washing in an enclosed space.

It's funny you should say this, as I put my duvet set in mine last night and thought, if only I had some hooks up high 😂 As it was, I draped it over hangers but had to rotate later!

Mine would fit an airer in it if I rehung the door to open outwards, which I may do at some point. Currently it has shelves and a rail and I've posted about it many times on here as I find it the most useful thing in my house! It's a game changer for drying jeans and great for wet shoes that would otherwise go smelly if left to dry normally!

It’s a lovely warm cat bed

Dry lots of clothes in mine on an open airyer especially in the winter periods. Store all my towels and spare bedding. Amazing!

Denyite · 05/10/2024 20:36

I'm very excited about all the drying and airing I'm going to do. The cat is looking forward to it too.

Mine is just a 75cm square cupboard, but doesn't have a tank so is quite roomy.
It has a radiator along one side and a pull out airer, similar to pictures, along the back. Mainly used for smalls & t-shirts, but only in the winter when the heating is on.
Slotted shelves all the way across at about shoulder height with towels stacked on and 2 wooden (curtain) poles attached underneath towards the front running from one side to the other that will each take a bath towel folded along the short edge and hung there to dry after showers.

I’d be using it for proving dough!
