Cat flap in a window, options?

We need a catflap in our conservatory as I've started working in there

We have double doors with full height glass

With a glass panel either side, then 3 larger panels down the side (other 2 walls are the house walls)

Currently we have left a door open which was lovely in the summer but even this early in the autumn/winter I am freezing!

So change one door to put the cat flap in that?
Is it cheaper to replace the glass with am insulated panel and put the flap in that?

If I do the panel, which panel? It's going to look pants?

Can't the cat use the existing cat flap? I'm not sure I understand why you need to get a new one for the conservatory?

If you do get one, it's prohibitively expensive (ime) to get a glass panel with cat flap integrated and they spoil the whole look of the door - a split panel even more so.

Tell the cat to go round!

You can have cat flaps installed in sealed DG units.
For our cats we built a "tunnel" through the brick wall with a cat flap at each end, the outer one was normal (for weather protection) and the internal one was chip operated. Worked fantastically.👍

@BloodyAdultDC The existing catflap is an open door and I'm getting cold

So we don't need a replacement we just need a cat door

@Nourishinghandcream there isn't an appropriate wall

Does the cat flap need to be in the conservatory though? Is there not another door anywhere in the house?

NonmagicMike · 03/10/2024 13:45

You can as you’ll know have the flap put in the glass. Will it look pants? In my view yes. Do you have any option? Sounds like no. I just installed a smart cat flap from sure flap through a wall. Best thing I’ve done for our two - they can now come and go as they please without me needing to freeze by leaving the window open all day. Also stops the other cats getting in. If you don’t have an appropriate wall in the conservatory do you have one anywhere else? Does the conservatory cover the whole back of the house?

We had a cat flap put in a French door. The existing sealed unit has to be removed and they put in another one with a hole cut in-then fit the cat flap. I think ours cost about £300 so not cheap but it’s made our lives much easier. We also got a flap controlled by an app, so it automatically unlocks in the morning and locks her in at night. It tells you when the cat has left/entered so you know if they’re inside. We were a bit gulp at the price but 3 years later, it’s been so worth it!

We put a cat flap in a window too, slightly different as it was a non-opening window divided into three sections, so not as large a piece to switch. But the guy just came with a pre-cut piece of glass and installed it, and he gave us the piece he took out to keep in the shed in case we wanted to change it back. Cat is mostly too stupid to use it, but when she remembers I'm glad we had it done!

We have a cat flap in a conservatory door. You will need a new glass panel as they out the hole in on manufacture. Very easy to fit as well takes them about 10 mins to change over the panel and fit the cat flap.

Ok a door in a glass panel may be the way to go - ill see how much it is

Thanks all

We had a similar situation. It was cheaper - and quicker - for a builder to knock through the wall and put a catflap in the brickwork.

Perhaps as a short term fix - something like this:

I can't find it now, but they had videos on their website of the insulation.

We were going to adapt the door opening to put a cat flap in.

The quality was superb. But ofc the cat couldn't even be bribed to go in there with cat treats.

We started off with a smaller, cat specific one, but the quality was shocking.

We had a cat flap in a glass door- the glass panel was replaced. Quick job.

Does it look pants? No, it looks like a cat flap in a door.

And it's a bloody sight better than being the cats' servant.

Give over! You are still the cat’s servant, just in other ways.

Not wrong there. Two furry tyrants!

BuzzieLittleBee · 04/10/2024 17:32

Does the conservatory have low walls at the bottom, or is it glass all the way down to ground level? I'd put the flap in the wall, if there is one - it's probably easier to 'hide' it that way. It's an easy job to put a flap in a wall and you can do it yourself, so it's much cheaper.

MrsJoanDanvers · 04/10/2024 17:45

It seemed to us much easier to install in the door than through a wall-we have cavity walls. Also, when kitty is no more, or if we sold the house, we can just replace the sealed unit we took out-it seems harder to replace the brickwork to how it was before?

KatyMac · 04/10/2024 18:20

No brickwork and her emergency litter tray and food are both in the conservatory so I'd rather she could be locked in there from the house as she brings us presents 🎁
