Sofas - why is it so hard to find one

Already getting stressed with choosing a sofa for our next home. Our current one was from made.com and it’s lasted well but we want a deeper one next time. Have looked at loaf but reviews aren’t great given the price. Just viewed a lounge co one in furniture village and wasn’t wowed by it. Have seen some nice ones on sofa sofa but their showroom is in wales! Or do we just go basic with ikea? We have two boys 7 & 3 so maybe factor that in too…

So many options out there! I’ve been looking around for a new sofa and I’m considering one from Keep sofa as they come in modular pieces and have replaceable covers which is massively appealing when you have messy kids!!

ErrolTheDragon · 02/10/2024 18:50

We were unimpressed by the sofas in shops, but found a small firm locally. Not cheap but I think will be durable, and made to the dimensions we wanted and there was a massive choice of fabrics.
It might be worth trying to find out if you've anywhere like that near you.

Bamboopole · 02/10/2024 18:54

It's a nightmare - and everything is velvet! Took us forever to pick, in the end (due to kids) we went for a cheap sofa from swyft. We tried loaf sofas but found them far too soft and not at all comfortable.

Walkthelakes · 02/10/2024 18:57

We are also looking for sofas and I was pleasantly surprised by ikea when I popped in last week. They seemed to have upped their game since I last looked. And the prices were so reasonable. I’m definitely going to consider them whereas before I’d written them off

We ended up in dfs and I actually like that you can try them. Service was great. Went for a totally different sofa to what I thought I wanted from on line. I have to say, I hated about 90% of the styles though. We’ve had this one 2 years and I still love it, it’s so comfy!

anythinginapinch · 02/10/2024 19:02

I've got an absolute beauty from sofa.com. Stunning. I sat in it for ooh 5 mins in the shop - blissful.

At home, I sit in it when I can for hours at a time and omg it's not comfy at all. So it's being replaced with a Dfs sofa not as pretty but bastard comfy. Would you like a beautiful barely used sofa cheap?!

Iamthemoom · 02/10/2024 19:27

We've got two Snugs and they're my favourite. Everything wipes off with a baby wipe, firm when you get them which I like though they soften up, super fast arrival (3 days versus 8 weeks I waited for our Sofoligy sofa!) they're so comfy and look great too.

WildCherryBlossom · 03/10/2024 08:16

We are super happy with ours from sofa.com

I had fabric swatches but decided to drive to one of their showrooms to check them out in person, service was excellent, delivery in less than stated time. The feather wrapped foam is just the right balance if soft and firm.

Autumnalfun · 03/10/2024 08:43

I’d also recommend Dfs, ours is about 8 years old now, it is velvet, and we had it scotch guarded, and I just buy tins off of Amazon and re spray it every now and again, I also restuffed the seat cushions as I like them nice and plump, with some cushion stuffing from Amazon.

recently a spring went, as someone threw themselves on it, and as it is guaranteed for 15 years they came out and fixed it. The repair guy couldn’t believe it was 8 years old as looks new, the sofa is sturdy , good quality, and the service has been good.

We got a sofa from Next and we're really happy with it. Before we've had ones from Snug and Harvey's which weren't good at all, but this one is great. Nice and firm, a material that doesn't pick up hair and dust constantly and it's got nice wide seats for putting your legs up on.

Nourishinghandcream · 03/10/2024 09:24

Would never want to buy something like a sofa without trying it out first.
Have always liked Lucas World Of Furniture (if you are within striking distance of the Chilterns).
Not the cheapest but a massive selection and we have been happy with the sofa and suite we bought from them.

I got a great condition M&S sofa from the BHF shop. Looked little used and super comfy. Cost £100.
Id been looking around for a new one and was very underwhelmed.

TheHorneSection · 03/10/2024 09:26

We just bought a Grand Designs one from DFS and I absolutely love it, hugely deep and we have the ottoman too to turn it into a bit of a corner sofa. It’s the Hudson or Huxford or something like that.

OdileO · 03/10/2024 09:28

Omg we have just been through this and had the exact same issue, looked everywhere. We then found sofa.com (I think probably recommended on here) and went to see them in store and we were sold on them within minutes. They are stylish (in my opinion!) but not as expensive as Loaf and they are really comfy. Delivery was a bit of a faff but I think that was more down to DH not being amazing at checking the measurements! We had to go through customer service over something and they were quick and helpful, they didn’t quibble.

blobby10 · 03/10/2024 09:29

Choosing a sofa is one of my biggest hates - I've bought three so far. First one was with DH so had a second opinion and whilst not brilliant they did last for a long time. Then we divorced and I had to choose a new one for my house on my own and went for leather which was really comfy in the shop but the brand new ones never bedded in and I forgot that I like something on the side to lean against. So sofa #3 bought in 2022 had higher sides, fabric covers (leather was too cold) and comfy in the shop but is giving me a bad back and the sides are too high for lying on comfortably!!

Blanketyre · 03/10/2024 09:30

I've just bought two new sofas - an Ikea ektorp, and a Lounge Co one. Really pleased with both of them. The lounge co one is really comfy.

Freakydeak · 03/10/2024 09:31

I got a brilliant sofa from DFS. It really wasn't hard to find and most of their stock fits your criteria.

iloveyoubutilovememore · 03/10/2024 11:49

@Blanketyre which is comfiest out of the lounge co and ektorp?

Is it in Aylesbury and called Lucas Furniture@?

I have two very old sofas, I am happy with them but they need to be reupholstered...can't find anywhere reasonable though....I am in London: any tips?

sweetpickle2 · 03/10/2024 13:16

For anyone recommending Snug, they dont exist anymore!

When you say old do you mean antique, as it’s usually cheaper to buy new rather than reupholster. Unless moneys no object for you here.

Possiblynotever · 03/10/2024 15:38

Just old...one is white with a black ink spot (darling DD used a permanent marker on it). 90s sofas. Lots of life I cannot part from...

Then prepare to pay a lot more than a new one to reupholster im afraid
