We don't have hive plus so just a standard schedule. DH has set a schedule TW here it's at a minimum of 19 degrees at all times. Even overnight. 🙈

Crikey, do you even manage to get your house to 30 degrees!

In summer 2022 when we had outtside temwpratires of over 40 degrees for several days in a row, the hottest our flat got was 29 degrees!

ByMerryKoala · 02/10/2024 12:35

So, 10pm-6am 16c, 6am to 10pm 20.5c. Sometimes I'll boost it on an evening.

In the dead of winter on those freezing days that never make it out of the negatives, I have the nighttime temperature at 17/18c because I found that if you let it drop to 16c that it takes so much energy to get the house back up to temperature again that you use just as much gas throughout the day but it's uncomfortably cold in the morning to boot.

GasPanic · 02/10/2024 12:37

lololulu · 02/10/2024 10:26

Is this too much?

DDs have asked me to put it on higher for after school and for shower time 😬😬

My guess is you've got the thermostat next to a radiator or something.

What are the bills like ?

That's just the target temperature, not the temperature in the house. I guess it ensures that the heating stays on in that time but I imagine that it would never reach it given the low temperatures set throughout the day.

DoublePeonies · 02/10/2024 12:39

Not as fancy as hive, but currently just putting on for an additional hour if the house is cold
In winter, it cones on for 90 mins first thing (starting 15 mins before I get up). Then it's on from about 3pm til 8pm. DH sometimes puts it on for an extra hour about 11am if he's at home.
Thermostat set to 18C

Heating off overnight.

@lololulu 30C is bonkers, but I'm equally not surprised they are complaining at 10C either. And 15C is also pretty cold. You've got 2 extremes there! What about sonething like 20C for all 3 of those time periods? And then slowly drop it if you want to reduce the heating bill further.

We are about to get Hive fitted, would you say it's saved you money overall?

I don't get it, how is a Hive different to a normal thermostat with controller where you program in set times? Other than the fact you can turn Hive on/off when you are out of the house?

ByMerryKoala · 02/10/2024 12:50

You can control it with more complexity, across a whole week, rather than a day. You can adjust it away from home - not just on and off but up and down to suit. You can have different temperatures in different areas of the house, so if you have radiator dials you can programme bedrooms to remain cooler than downstairs. Stuff like that. Now sure it saves us any money though. I'm more likely to use it to ramp the heating up on the way home. 😬

You can control it from wherever you are. So on holiday for example, switch it off altogether then back on remotely when you land in the airport, or set off from wherever. Before we’d have to either come home to a freezing house which takes hours to get up to temperature, or leave it on the whole time we were away.

If youre out at unusual times, or for longer than expected it’s easy to switch off wherever you are, then back on in time for you to get home. If the weather turns out differently to expected you can alter the settings from wherever, turning it up or down ready for when you get home.

if youre home outside of your usual time you can boost it for a set amount of time, say an hour, without having to remember to turn it back off.

Heres our schedule, but it changes, a lot!

19 overnight is sane, that’s so bad for your sleep quality and health. It’s much better to sleep in a cool room, with warm layers. We’ve never had our heating on schedule, we just put it on a little bit if it’s really cold. Better to warm yourself than the room!i

Motherhubbardscupboard · 02/10/2024 13:13

@lololulu at 10 and 15 your heating will hardly ever switch on, you might as well have it switched off, which is probably why your DC are complaining. I am not part of the competitive cold brigade (I have the heating on all day) but I agree with everyone else that 30 degrees is absolutely insane. I don't believe it would even reach that temperature. Have it at 18-20 when you're at home in waking hours, that seems to be the norm and should be comfortable enough. Stick it on 22 for a couple of hours if you really need to have it hotter than most people would find comfortable.

BakedBeansforabrain · 02/10/2024 13:15

This is our schedule at the moment, obviously this changes as it gets colder

8am to 8pm heating off jumper on, windows open until 4pm

8pm heating 20 degrees, heating off 10:30pm

i couldn’t sleep at night if the heating was on

its currently 17 degree’s in the living room

RosesAndHellebores · 02/10/2024 13:17

Do none of you have zones?

The cats get 15° in the family room and outside of 5.30 to 8am and 5pm to 10pm it's on frost control with the temp set to 17/18° in the larts of the house we use. I have a plug in rad for my study when I wfh rather than heating all that bit of the house. We wear a Jersey if we are cold or put on a fire in the room we are sitting in.

When it's v cold we tick it over at 15° for the sake of the fabric of the house.

Socks, slippers, jerseys, etc.

MeowCatPleaseMeowBack · 02/10/2024 13:17

Here you go but other people aren't really relevant. It depends on how well your house holds heat and if you have children or elderly living there.

ChefsKisser · 02/10/2024 13:18

We have boosted it twice in the evening but otherwise no heating (yet!). Our bedroom does feel very cold when we go to bed though, DCs are warm as above kitchen so not so bad.
Usually we have 20 degrees 6-8am and then same again 4-8pm with it set to come on overnight or in the day if drops below 15. DH would have to fully off but it’s an old house and it it gets really cold it takes hours to heat back up!

Fleur240 · 02/10/2024 13:21

5:30-7:00 18
7:00-15:30 14
15:30-20:00 18
20:00-5:30 16

Marmite27 · 02/10/2024 13:23

This is ours, the morning one is shifted by an hour at the weekends as we get up later.

30 is absolutely crazy, I bet your heating won’t even reach that. Putting a higher temperature does not make it heat up any quicker!

I sometimes change to 18 to 20 during the winter evenings.

WhereIsMyLight · 02/10/2024 13:26

We just have it to 18 all the time at the moment as in our old house it was better to just keep it at a constant temperature and boost if needed. We need to investigate properly if that’s beneficial in this house. I have the thermostat in DC’s room as they are a toddler and kick the covers off. The radiator in our room is on 1.5, the other radiators are turned off overnight. I want to install hive radiator thermostats to properly move heat to where it’s needed to where people are and when but I’m not sure if the cost is worth the savings.

CabraCadabra · 02/10/2024 13:30

Does having this replace the programmer you have on the walls? So you just use an app instead of a programmer? I need a dummies guide.

AnotherDelphinium · 02/10/2024 13:30

How big is your house?

When I had a two bed terrace that was open plan downstairs, the single thermostat worked great. Once I got a large house, I got the hive TRVs (thermostatic radiator valves) and now each room has its own schedule.

It’s saved an absolute fortune as some rooms don’t need heating until the late afternoon, bedrooms only need a boost morning and evening, etc.

WhichPage · 02/10/2024 13:33

is your house insulated, windows good?

you don’t need 30 at any point

for me max would be 21 for evenings other than that 19 but 18 overnight or if house empty in the day on the basis that it costs less to maintain temp than to reheat a house that has cooled down?

DH wants out 24 in the evening but we have settled on 22, him in a jumper and me in short sleeves

TennisLady · 02/10/2024 13:50

I miss Hive so much. Just moved into new home which is Nest and it's awful!

Spirael · 02/10/2024 13:58

Not Hive, but we have Honeywell EvoHome with TRVs so I can fine tune the temperature in each room. Generally I heat rooms to 20C for when they're in use, and let them drop as far as 14C if they're not.

During the week, I only heat the room I'm working in during the day. I heat a few other rooms for when my DDs get back from school, the kitchen diner at around mealtimes, and bedrooms I only heat for first thing in the morning and last thing before bed.

It's all hooked up to our smart home, so people can just use voice commands to tell the system to increase the temperature in specific rooms if they're being used outside the normal routine.

I heat the hot water for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening. Our hot water tank is well insulated and keeps the temperature well, and holds enough water for approximately 3 showers. If I know there's going to be a larger demand for water, I just boost it for an hour as needed.

I may have spent far too much time analysing it all!

The temperature you set is the temperature at which the heating will come on if your house falls below that temperature. The heating will turn itself off when the house hits that temperature.

Your house is never going to reach 30 degrees in a couple of hours. You may as well set it to 22 or 23 (still very toasty!). The rest of the time, your heating won’t come on at all until it’s absolutely freezing in your house (10/15 degrees!). The World Health Organisation says we need 18 degrees minimum during the day for good health, so that’s my argument when DH tries to sneak it down to 16!
