Fixing hole in downpipe

ReacherSaidNothing · 30/09/2024 15:06

We have a hole in one of our downpipes which takes the rainwater away from the gutters. It's a circular hole about 3 or 4 inches across, I think it was maybe cut open by the previous owner to try and alleviate a blockage.

It's been raining heavily today and the rainwater has been scooting out the hole and hitting the wall behind so we need to sort it but can't afford to get the whole pipe replaced atm, anyone have any tips on patching it up meantime?

Any water proof tape from screwfix etc or flash banding, which you can heat up with a hot air gun, just be careful if the pipe is plastic but it doesn't need much heat and is pretty much permanent.
We used some to seal a hole on a roof tile about 30 years ago and its still doing the job.

Losen the fittings and spin it around so the water does not go onto the wall. A temporary fix would be dry the pipe and cover the hole with gaffer tape.

Wrap some gaffer tape round it , it will be fine till you get it replaced.

Google downpipe access point or downpipe inspection hatch. Some cover the hole, some you cut a section out and slide it on. You won't need to access it but it will tidy it up.

facebook (not the most reliable for DIY tips admittedly) keeps showing me an advert for a paint like substance that dries and forms a waterproof surface. So, you would patch the hole and then paint over an around it to seal.
