4.5k for a composite door?!

Does this sound reasonable?
For context we're in the east mids.
Local company but Solidor door. Only reason I can think it's so £££ is that we have a curved top light which will need to be made to measure. I was expecting more like 2.5-3k max! Confused

We are 2hrs from London, SE, and were quoted about £3000 for a composite door- 2yrs ago! Ours was just for the door- we didn't have those extra windows on the side. Does your quote include those?
We ended up getting a local man to make an oak front door. It was a similar price, but more in keeping with the house and surrounding porch area.
How many companies have you had quotes from?

MissAtomicBomb1 · 26/09/2024 20:25

Yep it includes the side panels, though they'd be slimmer and less glass at the top. The guy who measured up thought a similar door would usually be around £2-2.5k so we were a bit shocked when the quote came back. I can only assume it's the curved fanlight at the top bumping it up or they don't want the job!
Still waiting on quotes from another company.

We got a quote for a composite front door a few years ago and were told that fanlights increase the price significantly.

Currently getting prices for single external doors (no side windows etc) and we’re getting £2.5 to £3k. So it’s probably about right.

I had a similar door without the top bits a couple of years ago, I dont remember exactly but it was between £2 and £2.5k, the increase sounds a lot even bearing time and extra bits in mind

Is the quote from a local or national firm?

It's a local firm that would fit but Solidor, the manufacturers, are a brand similar to Endurance etc.

Looks like I might have to save up a bit longer!

We've recently had something much more basic (but a curved arch top) and it cost us £2k with a small local company but bigger companies quoted us up to £3k, so yours sounds about right

Local firm in Warwickshire who use Endurance doors fitted ours two years ago for £1.6k. But no fanlights!

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 27/09/2024 22:01

Our Solidor front door alone plus installation cost and door furniture (knocker, letter box etc) was £2,800. That was November last year. Your surround and fan-light would add to the costs, obviously.

We had a Hurst door fitted earlier this year, just over £3k, and very similar to yours (door, two side panels and a top panel) we had the satin effect glass which put the price up a little but gives us privacy and allows light through. Got a quote through the website

Thank you, that sounds more reasonable, I'll have a look at those.
I'm not particularly bothered about it being a solidor or whatever. The original front door of the house from the 1920s is set behind the porch so we don't need anything with amazing security properties etc, just gobsmacked at how much everything costs now!
