Splitting a bedroom into 2

We are going to have to do this for a few years just looking for advice and tips from anyone who has done this?

Room is 15ft wide and 10ft long. It has a window at each end so light is not an issue. The rad is in one side of the room though and! We will not be doing this in a big building job to make new doors and hallways, just some privacy for primary aged siblings sharing a room until we have more space. I have seen people doing this with bookcases to make a split. We think getting high sleepers with desks under will help with making the best of the floor space.

Any tips or advice? I do worry this is not much to work with! Storage for clothes is factored in - no wardrobes needed in the room as there is a decent sized internal double wardrobe that can be used with rails and drawers.

Given that it is a few years away, would you not consider moving house and getting a property that suits your needs permanently. As your DC become teenagers then prob advisable to have more room as if you come to sell in the future you may struggle with that configuration…

There's a series on BBC player called 'your home made perfect'.
Some episodes had some really great examples of splitting rooms with furniture and creating a surprising amount of storage and privacy.

Might be worth watching to see if the ideas could work in the short term.
May be a stop gap before a more permanent move.

I don’t want to be facetious but obviously this not an option or I would have said that? We have what we have now and making what we can of it.

It is fairly temporary whilst small and no we do not have the property or funds to give them their own room for a couple of years. If this was an option now I would not be considering this. They currently share a room in bunk beds this would be more of a separation for them until they get their own rooms in a couple of years when things are different.

Thanks I will look! DP has seen some ugly (imo) high sleepers in ikea and they are so expensive and clunky it isn’t what I had in mind 😂.

I will explain if needs be

-We have to stay in the area for school reasons for now, it’s so close, we will be free to move further out once secondary places are chosen
-Bigger houses are much further away or need a lot of work or unaffordable which we do not have the funds - our house doesn’t need any work doing in it apart from this
-it is also a lovely house with other shared spaces, storage etc.
-it is in a nice place close to amenities, a huge park etc - kids are outdoor types
-we can’t afford a loft conversion or an extension right now but might be able to in future
-adult child at home will move out in future
-kids like sharing but we feel need their own little spaces as they get older

When I was younger. My sister and I wanted our own rooms. There was just one bay window. My dad built a temporary wall down the middle right down the middle of the bay window. Worked fine. Only problem was I had to walkthrough her room to get to mine 😂 but we were young and didn’t really care. We use to have two care bear telephones go through the end of the wall so we could still talk.

Eldest is at uni now but dds shared a large bedroom. About 13.5 × 12 foot i think looking at similar houses on Rightmove.
There was a chimney breast at one end and we put a chest of drawers against that which gave a bit of separation as their beds were in the alcoves.
It meant they still both got heat from the rad on one side and light from the windows on the other.
Probably not what you are looking for but it worked. It didn't cause arguments. I tended to hang out downstairs, dd1 in their bedroom and dd2 in my room which has a desk she uses with her laptop or on my bed. So we weren't on top of each other.
I know it's frowned on, but with house prices as they are now, I think it'll return to being more normal.
A friend used bunk beds down the middle separated by boards on the top of one side and bottom of the other to make it into 2 rooms. I've not seen it so don't know what it was like

I actually like the bunk beds right in the middle with the boarding up each side for privacy I think this would work well. Then they could have their desks on another wall. As otherwise even more floor space is gone with 2 giant high sleepers

I was going to suggest the same as London mummy - given that you have a window at each end this would probably work really well.

amothersinstinct · 25/09/2024 16:32

I have boy girl twins and ultimately will be looking at this - there are quite a few ideas on Pinterest but you have to build it yourself

Fernhurst · 25/09/2024 16:33

I've thought about moving but my dds would miss their friends and London and the good public transport.

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/09/2024 16:36

Something like this in the middle of the room

Have 8 boxes each so two colours so can put toys /books /clothes in and privacy
