How popular is Rightmove?

EagerHouseMover · 23/09/2024 18:42

That's it really.
When we first got our estate agent round to do a valuation, he talked the talked.

However, one thing he did say was that he didn't think Rightmove was the best portal to use. He said used it only as a last resort, and used other portals first, because "People just browsing use Rightmove, but actual serious buyers search on Zoopla and OntheMarket, etc." Both DH and I queried this at the time, as we thought Rightmove was more popular. But the EA won is over (as well as assuring is that he already had plenty of people on his books that he would call); we trusted him, as we thought the EA knew best (naive yes, but this is our first house selling).

Anyway, we're now week number 4 into selling, and we have put our feet down and insisted he add our listing onto Rightmove (which he originally told us he would do after 3/4 weeks, as the last resort, so this is what he agreed with us anyway).

During this time, we have had only one viewing last week. So we went live on Rightmove today.

It just made me think/wonder how popular Rightmove is. We are not proceed able at the moment, but we are/will be serious buyers, and have been looking on selling sites. RM just hands down seems to have the most listings, even all the listings of Zoopla that I've seen have also been on RM.

He didn't want to pay the insertion fee.

He is also talking bollocks.

I would be firing his arse.

Yeah, as I said, he definitely talked the talk (even after we questioned the Rightmove strategy - should have listened to our guts then).

We haven't been overly impressed in general - lack of communication, and turning up late for the one viewing we've had so far! (I kid not. He was only a few minutes late, but the viewer was already knocking at the door. I let the viewer in, as I didn't want to be rude and make her wait outside for the EA, so I started showing her round the house myself, until he showed up!).

We are in a sole agency contract with him at the moment - another 8 weeks left on that. DH and I have already discussed, if it isn't sold in that time, we'll just take it off market for a few months (it'll be almost December at that point, and people are going to be more focused on Christmas). Fortunately, we have no immediate urgency to sell, so we'll pull it until the Spring, and go with another agent at that point.

But trying to be positive, and hoping things might pick up now that we are listed on RM.

Thanks everyone - you have all confirmed what I thought!

RM is the only one I look at. I check it out every day!

Pixiewombat · 23/09/2024 19:54

I've done an awful lot of buying and selling plus doing viewings, etc. I think you have a sensible plan. GLWS.

DrinkElephants · 23/09/2024 19:57

We’re buying/selling atm and I look at Rightmove every day for houses. I sometimes use zooplankton but only to look at sold prices never to see what’s on the market.

Mum2jenny · 23/09/2024 19:58

I only look on Rightmove too for houses

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 23/09/2024 19:59

Yeah he hoped he’d sell it off of RM to save the fees. Unfortunately it didn’t happen so he’s had to suck it up.

Zoopla abd RM are definitely the most used.

Twiglets1 · 23/09/2024 20:00

That’s the biggest load of shit I’ve heard in a long time.

Everyone looks on Righmove. Some people look on other sites too, others don’t bother.

Don’t engage an EA who doesn’t advertise your property on Rightmove, they are only making that decision on financial grounds.

Icanttakethisanymore · 23/09/2024 20:00

Rightmove is expensive so he’s trying to save the fees.

DottoTrain · 23/09/2024 20:01

I'd be suspicious if a house was on Zoopla and wasn't listed on Rightmove, and think something was wrong with it / Zoopla was an old listing or something.

Change agents. Estate agents are an untrustworthy bunch (I'm related to some and even I think that!). I'd switch up now as how can you trust anything they say now after failing to be honest at the first hurdle?

Mum2jenny · 23/09/2024 20:01

Tbf if selling in Scotland it does seem to be via solicitors groupings. The Tayside property centre (I think that’s their name) seems to be a standard website for that area.

AtmosAtmos · 23/09/2024 20:02

I’m in Yorkshire and NE and use RM

grlpwer · 23/09/2024 20:06

If I was only using one selling site it would be rightmove.

He's lied to save money.

FasterMichelin · 23/09/2024 20:08

I only ever look on Rightmove.

Littletreefrog · 23/09/2024 20:08

Absolutely have to be on RM otherwise you are only getting a small.proportion of the potential buyers.

I didn't know plankton where good with market stats

I know its a typo but quite a fun one lol.

Blackberriesandcobwebs · 23/09/2024 20:36

Rightmove for selling, Zoopla for looking at sold prices in the area. Sounds like he didn't want to pay their fees!

cluefu · 23/09/2024 20:37

We had an estate agent say that to us and we didn't go with them. I was also a buyer and I used Rightmove as my main source of properties to view and now that I'm a passive viewer, I still look at Rightmove regularly, not any others. So there will be people like me who only see properties on RightMove and also, it really is the most popular website. Definitely wouldn't be trusting the EA.

This reminds me of when I was reading aloud from Hamlet in an English class and there was a line about a coronation, but for some reason when I read, I said…

From whence though willingly I came to Denmark
To show my duty in your Coronation Street

rainingsnoring · 23/09/2024 22:29

As others have said, he just doesn't want to pay the high Rightmove fees so has been dishonest with you. Unfortunately, Rightmove have rather a monopoly on residential property marketing so you need to use them to get the best exposure.

ViaRia01 · 23/09/2024 22:36

Well, in the interest of balance, I just came here to say that my personal preference is on the market, and I use it most days at the moment as I’m hoping to move in the next year or so.

The agent absolutely wants to sell your house, just as you want to sell it. So although you haven’t yet had much luck without rm, I am sure he genuinely felt it would have been fine on the other two sites. Fingers crossed for you, for more interest/ viewings in the coming weeks

Seeingadistance · 23/09/2024 23:32

Thismummyrunstheshow · 23/09/2024 19:31

I've only ever looked on RM for properties. In fact, I look daily sometimes at RM even now and I'm not even buying. It's like property crack to me, I can't stop Blush

I also have a RM addiction.

Halfemptyhalfling · 23/09/2024 23:36

One of the more successful agents round here doesn't use right move and sells well to locals

Rupert Murdoch wants to buy Rightmove sadly

Edithisoverthere · 23/09/2024 23:56

Do you think RM is best in Scotland too? Thinking of moving estate agent anyway. We're on with one of the area property centres and was told RM was a waste of time, yet that's where I always look 🤔

MaxandMoritz · 25/09/2024 17:04

In the parts of Scotland I'm familiar with, RM is little used compared to ESPC, TSPC and ASPC.
