Smoke from next doors chimney making me feel sick

Hi
My neighbour has a kitchen extension and they have put a chimney for the wood burner which billows out smoke about level from my bathroom window.
Whenever I'm outside and they have their fire lit, the smell makes me feel sick, it's horrible, instead of the smoke going up into the air it hovers around the chimney and can't go anywhere due to the buildings surrounding it.
The council won't do anything, and the neighbours say its legal.
I was wondering if I could get an outdoor carbon monoxide detector ? I know they usually only work indoors, but I think it's so bad that it might be able to measure high levels outside.

Aim their chimney pipe with your garden hose.

I am sure you'll get a whole pile of people posting to sympathise how awful it is but there is little you can do.

You've checked and it's legal and the council can't do anything. Measuring carbon monoxide outside won't do anything constructive unless you want to get yourself in papers for one of those endless court cases where neighbours end up broke.

So, cut your losses, preserve your mental and financial health and just buy a good air purifier. Or move.

You haven't included a diagram or measurements, but maybe this is useful?

What are they burning? If its smokeless coal then I sympathise - that stuff stinks acrid! Hardwood logs are more palatable

Start with the local authority

They can decide on the legality of it or if it is something they can take action on

Thank you @Exx

The relevant bit of that I think is

What have the neighbours to do with it..?
There are also requirements if there are other buildings within 2300mm of the ‘regulated building’.
So adjoining buildings less than a drive width away from the chimney also impose a requirement to raise the outlet at least 600mm above any part of the adjoining building (D).

So get on to Planning Enforcement
