What is this white line?

Does anyone know what this white line is? It’s on a property I’m sue to go and look round.
also the roof looks very black compared to next door’s. Is this a sign it would likely need replacing?
obviously would have a survey but great evil for any wisdom on here!

What is this white line?

Isn’t it a drain pipe?

helibirdcomp · 22/09/2024 14:10

Its a stack pipe/breather pipe. That looks like a loo outlet half way up. Colour of roof is no indicator of condition. It could be newer or older than next door and hence just a different colour

Hard water staining from a dripping cistern overflow that's been neglected for some time.
(it's to the left of the stack pipe)

I’m assuming she means the white line on the bricks - adjacent to the drain pipe 😂

minipie · 22/09/2024 14:12

I am assuming OP means the line of bricks that is much whiter than the rest which forms a vertical line a couple of feet left of the soil stack pipe.

It's an overflow/leak of water. Could be from the gutters or some other overflow.

My friend's (rented) house was horrendously mouldy inside where there was damp on the walls outside but once the leak outside was fixed the damp inside cleared up.

I don't know if brickwork/mortar can be damaged by being permanently wet or not but that would be something I would want to check.

minipie · 22/09/2024 14:14

Hard water staining from leaky gutter or pipe is a possibility

Could also be efflorescence although I can’t see why it would happen in that pattern

Or maybe it’s a mark from something that used to be attached like a trellis for a climber

You’ll have a better idea once you’ve seen it in the flesh

Nourishinghandcream · 22/09/2024 14:16

Photo is a bit fuzzy but looks to be staining from a leak.
Is there an overflow above, if not check the gutter?
Whatever, if it is a leak then it would appear to have been happening for some time. Check for signs of wet brickwork, green growth, damp patch on the ground etc.

TheCountessofLocksley · 22/09/2024 14:16

That looks like efflorescence- when the salt crystals in bricks and mortar rise to the surface. It's usually temporary and nothing to worry about - looks worse than it is.

If it was a new build I'd not be concerned at all. Efflorescence often occurs in the spring with new builds. However we this property is much older and I'd be concerned about damp. I'd definitely get a full survey done and also ask the vendors about any damp proofing work they'd had along with receipts.

SilkFloss · 22/09/2024 14:17

Could it be from where a previous drainpipe was situated and was painted badly, staining the wall behind?

This and the pp can’t be serious. No one can seriously think she was asking what the pipe was, hy using the term white line and , um not the actual white line of discolouration on the bricks 😂😂😂😂😂

😂 I’m tired and need my glasses-I didn’t even notice that!

My guess is the loft has a header tank and that stain is the result of a float valve has been leaking for years, causing the overflow pipe to drip.
It's a sign of poor maintenance. Is the house an ex rental ?
