Blind for wide window - would 2 side by side look odd?

Help! I'm looking for a blind for a 240cm wide window. We had a bit of a disaster with a wooden Venetian blind which looked lovely but was too heavy to operate and eventually fell off the wall, narrowly missing DS! It was the max width that the company made but clearly was just too heavy.

So I'm wondering whether to go for two Venetian blinds next to each other. Has anyone else done this? Wondering if it might look a bit odd as there would inevitably be some kind of gap between the two.

Or should I give up on the idea of a wooden Venetian blind and go for something else. It's for a dining room window -gets direct sunlight in the afternoon so I really liked being able to adjust the amount of light coming in.

All thoughts welcome. Thanks so much

I don't think it would look odd but maybe a bit annoying to have to fiddle with multiple blinds.
What about plantation style shutters?

ThirstyThursday · 21/09/2024 14:34

@whatacat I have much the same issue, I still haven't found a solution I'm happy with.

sorry just commiserations.

What about vertical blinds? Or something like perfect fit which attaches to the window itself? Is it one big pane of glass? If not you could have a blind for each section.

UngratefulOldCabbage · 21/09/2024 15:27

We have similar width windows in our house. Ended up with blinds2go vertical blinds which were reasonable and fitted perfectly. Planned to replace at some point but 6 years later and they're still doing the job perfectly so keeping for a bit longer!

Have a look at the window panels/panel blinds on the IKEA website. They might be a good solution for you and are very flexible if you don't want the whole window covered up all the time. Otherwise, I think three always looks better grouped together than two!

Shutters would be good.

Marinel · 21/09/2024 18:58

We have wide windows and have two blinds side by side on them - but they are roller blinds, not Venetian. They look fine.

I'm not sure if it would work as well with Venetian blinds, I'd probably go for shutters if I wanted that slatted look.

ToastCrumbsInMyBed · 21/09/2024 19:08

Vertical blinds look bad and shutter ones block a lot of light. I've often seen two wooden blinds on a wide window. They look fine once they are lined up with the frame divisions in the window. So you might have one 80 wide and one 160 wide if that's how the openings are. From the outside it then looks like one blind.

JerryCanDo · 21/09/2024 19:09

If it's fallen off the wall I would imagine it's the fixings that are at fault. Are they robust enough? And what are the fixings going into? Plasterboard, timber frame, brick...? In theory you can safely hang very heavy things on walls (think kitchen wall units full of plates) if you fix them right.

Johaanah · 21/09/2024 19:12

I have two windows the same size (240cm) and when we had custom blinds fitted to every window in the house the guy suggested two blinds side by side because of the weight, they look fine to be honest - we have white wooden blinds with tapes.

Portakalkedi · 21/09/2024 19:30

You can get a gap between two blinds though. We moved to a house with giant bifold doors (hate these stupid things) which has 3 panels, so had two blinds, one for two panels, and one over the door that we never use. Looks OK but for a small gap where they meet.

Soontobe60 · 21/09/2024 20:45

We had a very wide window, and ended up with Venetians where the slats were plastic. Sounds awful, but they had a wood grain pattern and wide slats in a light oak colour. They worked very well.

Thanks so much everyone - really helpful. @ThirstyThursday good to know it's not just us struggling to find a solution! And great to know it's worked OK for you @Johaanah. We might just go for 2 and live with a small gap.

My worry about plantation shutters is that they would block a lot of light. Most of the time during the day we would want the blinds fully up for maximum light.

@JerryCanDo I think the fixings were fine as they actually stayed on the wall when the blind came down. Because the blind was so heavy, you had to really yank the cords to pull it up and down - and I think that's what eventually pulled it off the fixings.

@ForPearlViper three would be nice - I will have a think, thank you

And @Soontobe60 that's interesting about the plastic/faux wood as one site I looked at said it was heavier than wood. I will investigate some more...

This is one of these things I think about constantly as I stare at the empty fixings on the wall! I've been going round in circles for months and really want something up before it gets too much colder. All your answers have been really helpful and I might actually make a decision now Smile

What kind of wood are your existing blinds? If they aren't bamboo, you could consider bamboo? It's around half the weight of other woods commonly used for blinds such as maple and beech. Just a thought.

Seeingadistance · 21/09/2024 23:14

The house I stayed in on holiday this summer had a wide window - single pane of glass - and two roller blinds. There was a gap, but very small and given the overall width of the window, minimal impact.

Whatifthis · 22/09/2024 10:06

Was the blind that fell down solid wood slats? I have a similar sized window and have been looking at samples from Blinds 2 Go of plastic that looks like wood similar to the one @Soontobe60 linked above. I haven't ordered yet but hadn't thought about them being too heavy! The samples seem very light weight in the cheaper ranges, but some of the wider slats are heavier now I think about it, especially if you get the decorative tapes as well.

Op if you are thinking of two side by side other suggestions (neither come in large enough dimensions for one blind as I've looked for myself!) we have had are a magic screen privacy blind which let light in and allow you to see out but took the glare off (used in our south facing TV lounge) https://www.blinds-2go.co.uk/roller-blinds/32033/oculus-bone-white.html?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwgL-3BhDnARIsAL6KZ69hFJ1tUA7udT42jnQfW6l24wmJHJwS8pVxM52wEswL0ZAb6fVrofYaAhXnEALw_wcB

Also have had a day and night roller blind before in our dining room and home office. They can get misaligned with use so the stripes look wonky but this is fixed by pulling the blind out all the way then rolling it back again https://www.blinds-2go.co.uk/enjoy-roller-blinds/15554/enjoy-vision-soft-white.html

Enjoy Soft White Roller Blind

We’ve called these blinds Enjoy for a reason. You get to enjoy lots of lovely light, plenty of privacy and a stunning view of the outside. The way these blinds work is pretty clever. They’ve got two layers of fabric that you simply line up whichever w...

Yes it was solid wood. According to this the faux wood ones are heavier www.englishblinds.co.uk/blog/ask-an-expert/which-is-heavier-real-wood-or-faux-wood-blinds

I like the look of your 2 suggestions, thanks. Will get samples
