Have you tried to sell a haunted house?

Did you have to declare it on any forms?

Would it put you off a house if you heard a rumour that it was haunted?

Was listening to uncanny podcast on the way home and as we're packing up to move hopefully soon, it got me thinking.

How on earth could you possibly declare it in the paperwork?

A friend was trying to sell their very old, niche, house, the estate agent specifically recommended suggesting in the description that "there might be a ghost" to drum up media interest. (It didn't work and they took it off the market, but I don't think it was the lack of ghosts that was the problem...)

I discovered, after I purchased & moved in, that my house had previously been advertised as 'haunted' in a magazine that covered that topic. It was mentioned in an article that discussed the monetisation of 'haunted houses'. You don't have to disclose, under UK law. I wish I'd known though 😕

Absence of proof isn’t proof of absence hun 🙄

I think you might want to practice critical thinking as it pertains to house sales.

Yes I did. I didn’t tell the buyers or anyone who looked around but I felt quite guilty. Luckily the person who bought it was investing and just wanted to air b n b it so I didn’t worry too much

Never even thought of that. I just wanted to get out of there tbh. Hated the place.

I love threads like this. My house is a 1920’s semi. Nothing extraordinary but I knew when I viewed I had to have this house. We have now been here nearly 30 years. When my daughter was a teenager a couple of minor strange things happened. Things moving. Weird noise's. She was convinced there was a ghost. Nothing since then and my house has such a friendly energy.

Thing is you need to check carefully any claim written about a house written in an Estate Agents' details. Not ghostly but facts about what you're supposedly buying!

My current house is mentioned in a US 'academic' book on the monitisation of hauntings. (it was advertised for sale as a haunted house)
The day we moved in, I stepped across the threshold and said: 'we have made a mistake'. I quickly found out from the village network that I had bought: 'that house'. I know two elderly religious (non gossipy) people locally. I spoke to one of them 5 years ago. They said: 'we wondered when you would come'. Aaargh.

This sounds like something from a film! (In a good way!) please tell us more about the people who were expecting you and whether it still feels like a mistake.

A house I inherited and partner renovated always gave us the willies. Partner hated being there late on his own although he's usually sensible.
Sold it to someone who is there 10 years still and they're very happy so maybe just us lol.

Thisbastardcomputer · 03/07/2025 08:03

My friend sold one, I’ve experienced funny going’s on while visiting. It was back on the market within twelve months, so I’d imagine the new people got their own ‘experience’.

lissetteattheRitz · 03/07/2025 08:08

My grandfather's childhood home was rented out by a family member who didn't disclose the odd things that had happened down through the years and the renters started reporting in things they'd experienced to him which aligned with family experiences down through the years. And they were busy medics who hadn't been checking with neighbours etc

You only have to answer questions that are on the property information form. Since ‘is the house haunted?’ Isn’t one of those, no you don’t have to declare it.

In the same way that ‘have aliens ever visited the house and performed experiments on you?’ isn’t one of the questions.

Exactly! 😀
