Wanting to move to Bath - but not sure where in Bath, can you help please lovely MNetters?

DH and I really want to move to Bath. However, not too sure which areas to focus on.

We need access out onto the M4, so I'm currently not too keen on the idea of Bathwick as it'd mean driving up the London Road each morning (or am I wrong?). Apart from that we like Bathwick very much.

DD has cerebral palsy, so we don't want a townhouse on three levels (just trying to sell one!), however we would ideally like a period house. For the same reason we'd want a property with off road parking.
We hope to have more dcs, so non-SEN schools are important too.

Help - where do we start please? So far we like Newbridge area, but we haven't really explored further than that.

Thank you !

Heck! The prices have come as a bit of a shock. We're planning to move from Gloucestershire, which shocked us price wise when we left London, but Bath is something else! We saw a house in Bathwick last week that needed tons of work and was really nothing special (1950s semi) and it went to sealed bids ( in current credit crunch climate). DH and I were obviously missing what was so special about the location (possibly school catchment area?).

I wonder if it's one that I've seen the details for...does it have a circular staircase? IF so it looks stunning.

Weston and Newbridge are good for access to the M4 (you can go the 'back way' via Weston and avoid the London Road).

Both have good local shopping with mini 'high streets'.

There are also quite a few 30's, 50's and 60's houses with off street parking. Not Georgian splendor admittedly but some are quite attractive Bath stone ones.

I'm in Newbridge and it's lovely (having said that we're moving out of Bath soon , not because we don't like it, just to be nearer family).

Newbridge junior school is supposed to be good and Oldfield Girls secondary (state school) is apparently becoming co-ed sometime soon by merging with one of the boys' schools.

Good luck with your search, I'll have a bash at answering any more questions if you have them

What about one of the villages north of Bath with good access to the M4 - Marshfield is nice and has a good primary school and is less than 10 minutes from M4.

If Bath prices are off-putting, you could try Chippenham. Again, good access to M4 but lots cheaper than Bath.

Its a great area to live in by the way.

ecoworrier · 21/04/2008 12:44

Agree with GooseyLoosey. Marshfield, Chippenham & surrounding villages, Corsham & surrounding villages. Much cheaper than Bath but really near Bath and good quality of life.

Right. Am here. Sorry.

Oooh so is sobernow. That's exciting.

How much marney? It does all depend on that really - also which schools you want.

ahundredtimes · 21/04/2008 14:09

Also gardens are an issue. Do you want a big garden?

chonky · 21/04/2008 21:37

Hello 100times. Thanks for checking in.

Erm..marney I guess up to £6-700K ( at talking marney) - however in the current market it would have to be absolutely farking perfect for us to tie ourselves up with an albatross of a mortgage like that. Not sure whether we could borrow the money at the moment either, even if we're prepared to live on bread and taytos for the next 25 years.

Big garden not important, we have no aspirations to spend all our time gardening (won't have time to working to pay off the mortgage ).

Schools - need a good SEN school, apart from that we're open to suggestions for future dcs. One of my mates went to Ralph Allen's and did exceptionally well academically about 10 years ago - it is still good? (she's also disgustingly bright, which could well have a lot to do with it ). Our preference would be state schools....

Chonky

Sorrt I am resurrecting your old thread. I was boired and looking through MN - I never knew that there was such a think as a property/DIY section, and saw thins

Anyho.

V.G. schools locally to Newbridge. (I live on the Newbridge/Weston boundary) I am planning to send my children to Newbrige Primary School. St Mary's (if you are RC) is also good apparently.

Good, poncetastic shops in Chelsea Road.

Newbridge Hill and Combe Park have nice big houses with own drives (although Combe Park is quite a busy road)

Sorry about typing. I am drinking wine.
