How did moving into a bigger property benefit you?

Just that really. We’ve finally accepted an offer on our house and have been actively looking for something a bit bigger. Family of four plus (numerous) pets, mainly would like a bigger garden and kitchen. Not fussed about tiny details if I’m honest! It seems that where we are (Norfolk) there is some kind of compromise if the house we view has a big garden. Usually bigger garden = smaller house and vice versa. My OH is set on getting a bigger garden whereas I’m more interested in space inside, given that England gets about three days of sun per year…

whilst our current house is suffocating and cramped, I’m just thinking about what we actually need space wise instead of what we would like. Thoughts? Does it make a big difference to every day life with young kids?

We definitely found it did- especially when they are being noisy or messy! We prioritised etra living space and a bigger kitchen/diner and it's made a huge difference. Thankfully, we got the garden space too (great for summer, not so in winter)

We rebuilt our house so it's gone from a 2/3 bed bungalow with 1 bathroom and separate loo into a 5 bed 4 bath with extra snug. Garden didn't suffer much as used an unusable strip to extend, and it's just brilliant as ND children and they need space to get quiet - impossible with old house!
We are talking about our next move in about 6-8 years, smaller house and land for more outside animals and a small business

We moved from a 3 bed semi to a 4 bed detached earlier this year. We've built on a utility room / downstairs bathroom. We got a pantry as part of the property which has been great. Have a spare room for a home office which has been a great addition too.

It’s so much easier having space. Everything has a home, the kids have space for their stuff, we have space for the pets, and we can all go off and be alone when we need it. Equally we have space to have people over whenever we do want to.

we have a bigger garden which I love.

The only downside is having more to clean!

baddaughter23 · 17/09/2024 21:53

Well there's more space obviously which is good. However it's led to me accumulating more crap.

It's nice being detached as no neighbour noise.

Big garden and big house equals more maintenance and cleaning. And more expensive utility bills.

Sorry you asked for the positives. Did I mention the space is good.

Went from a 2 bed to a 5 bed (family of 4, one pet, some wfh). So much easier with internal space to play. We were happy to compromise
on garden because if the weather is nice we are out most of the day anyway. Plus not masses of spare time to garden! Hope you find your perfect place OP.

I find it much more calming to have a bigger bedroom, rather than feeling cramped. But yes, more expensive to heat and eye-watering council tax!

Went from a small house to a 6 bed house. Blended family so made my life easier when adult kids come to stay as each have en-suite, and gave us entertaining space. Cant say a nice house makes one happy but certainly makes life more pleasant.

We moved from a flat to a house and our floor plan just about doubled. Every single room is bigger (particularly the kitchen) and we have three bathrooms vs one. The main thing though is just having more rooms and more distance between them. There are only three of us but if we were at home, you were never more than a couple of metres away from someone. You knew every time someone went to the loo. I love my DH and DS but I value having a bit more space than just hiding in my bedroom and pretending I can't hear them the other side of the door.

We moved to a bigger house about 5/6 years ago and while both had 4 bedrooms, this one has an extra living space downstairs- the snug- and it’s handy to have that extra reception room so we can be watching different programmes on TV. No more arguments about him watching sport which I find boring.

Also, when my son has friends over they can hang out in the snug. And we also have a study downstairs we didn’t have before which is handy for working from home. And an en suite to the main bedroom which is a useful additional bathroom we didn’t have before.

This house is also detached & quiet compared to our old house. Gardens are about the same size which is fine as we’re not gardeners.

Just extended from 3 beds to 5 I absolutely adore it I had a massive declutter even though we have more space as much prefer minimalist look and feel mentally lovely big master with en-suite and walk in wardrobe honestly feels like a hotel suite very lucky .

I really value having my own office, separate from other activities, so I can close the door at the end of the day. I love the fact that we have our own floor - with bedroom, bathroom, and an upstairs sitting room, so I can come upstairs and read or rest. I love the luxury of having a sofa in my bedroom too - it feels like such a sanctuary. If we have guests, they have their own floor too, which makes hosting so much easier for everyone. My son has his own floor too, which is going to be great when he is a teenager and has friends to visit. Downstairs, there are enough rooms for someone to be practicing an instrument, someone else watching television, someone else reading, without us all being in each others way. I just LOVE space.

I don't recognise that England only gets 3 days sun a year. I spend most of May - September outside.

But a bigger property for us meant a bedroom each, some privacy, more storage for winter/summer clothes, better sleep, less stress, better relax time, a choice of places to eat, a spacious kitchen with much more prep space (I like cooking), and no parking hassles, It's healthier too.

We don't have pets so our outside needs are somewhere to sit in the sun, to entertain friends, a washing line, safe parking, and somewhere to grow herbs, fruit & salads.

If your current house feels claustrophobic, I'd go for more indoor space. That stress is not good for you.

CountryCob · 18/09/2024 12:52

After a big declutter and lots of organising/ secondary storage/ zoning a big benefit is having places to put everything we have out of the way and be able to find it again/ keep track of what you have. Also having places for people to stay and were family members can use separate chill out space downstairs if they want plus separate office space. Before it was organised a big drawback was accumulating a lot of disorganised stuff. It does take a good bit of work and organisation to achieve what we have done but I have started to realise in the process that try as I might for our family having an really organised home we needed a new layout and more rooms.

Onemorepenny · 18/09/2024 13:02

Having more space is definitely a key benefit. And tall ceilings make the winter period somehow less bleak.

somehow our previous home was a storage haven, this one still needs a lot of help to get it to where it needs to be.

we moved from terraced to a semi, but looking at a final move in 5-8 years time to our 20 year home!
