Slight leak after boiler service :(

Hi all

Had my boiler serviced yesterday with Boxt as part of my plan with them.

This morning noticed a leak on the worktop. Not loads, it's maybe leaking about 10ml in 2 hours.

It looks like it's coming from, or gathering around, what looks like a big clear bottle top fitting.

As we still have hot water and heating is working Boxt aren't sending someone out for at least 5 days 😩

Any ideas what this could be? And do I need to stay in the house in case it suddenly starts pissing everywhere?

Just measured how much has leaked, because I'm tragic, 15ml since 6.30am

What make and model of boiler is it please?

Jfcsucks · 17/09/2024 10:05

Its a Worcester greenstar 4000. Only about 3 years old and has been serviced every year

That plastic part is the bottom of the condense water siphon. The boiler produces condensation while it is running, and needs to go to a drain so there will be a while plastic pipe probably going through the wall, or to a drain.

The clear plastic part you are having trouble with is a water trap that is designed to catch fumes. I think that the cap part has not been refitted correctly after servicing and is dripping.

Put a receptacle underneath it to catch any water, and see if you can straighten it up. You can see an 'o' ring in there (the black ring part) which needs to make contact all the way around.

If you can, remove the cap, and rub a bit of vaseline on the 'o' ring before you put it back. Just make sure it is squarely on the pipe it's attached to which runs up into the boiler.

I expect you'll actually be able to just wiggle it straight and won't need to take it off.

It shouldn't affect the working of the boiler, so if you don't feel confident enough to try the above, just put a receptacle underneath to catch drips and wait for the people to come back and fix it.

Hard to know what that bit is, but my best guess would say it is the magnetic trap.

On a boiler service they shouldn't really do anything that should make it leak, but they do remove the trap and clear it. Maybe they did not replace it properly.or tighten it back on enough.

You may be able to find online instructions on how to remove/replace or wait for them to return to do it.

Edit : I see HappiestSleeping knows more about it that me, so their advice is likely to be better !

Oh thank you both very much!

I'll work up the courage to give that a go HappiestSleeper. I'm hesitant because the last time I faffed with something underneath our (very, very) old boiler, think it was something to do with pressure? a cap thing snapped clean off in my hand as it was knackered and when I say that leaked, i mean a continuous jet of water with a force that could take skin off burst out and chaos followed.

DP said its probs what you said and just needs tightening or something and to just put a bowl under and wait (hes nervy about touching it too after last time 🤣) but after the other incident I was just a bit worried.

Thanks again, so much you're all ace. Will report back if I do sort it myself 😊

So it did feel pretty loose tbh I was able to tighten it up. So far so good no drips for nearly an hour! Thank you again!!!
