Where do you get your quality curtains from?

This really.
Looking for new bedroom curtains and have seen Hillary curtains. Not pleased with any of the samples and they all sadly look thin & cheap, 100% polyester.
Where do you get your nice curtains from that don't break the bank or is 100% rather the norm?

Second questions what do you think of 'dressage curtains' or fake curtains? a friend showed some to me and they looked quite nice but i don't know wether they're considered horrible? they will have roman blinds underneath but first things first what makes a good quality curtain that will hang well and doesn't cost a fortune?

Also popped into John Lewis and they all looked drab.

We have a really lovely pair from Curtains2Go (like Blinds2Go), which feel much more expensive than they were.

Geneticsbunny · 16/09/2024 19:17

eBay can be good depending on what you want.

LadeOde · 16/09/2024 22:15

Blinds2Go unfortunately do not offer a fitting service and I'm not confident enough to measure and fit/drill them in myself correctly (not a DIY person at all), so would really prefer a professional to do it.

Can posters pls say what the makeup of their bedroom curtains? can anyone recommend where they sell quality curtains that hang nicely & that don't feel like you could rip them in half with you bare hands.

Tbh, charity shops - they often have beautiful, practically new curtains for peanuts.

Puffalicious · 16/09/2024 22:24

I've always had mine made at a local fabric shop. The choice of fabrics/ styles etc is just amazing. They also offer a measuring & fitting service for all curtains/ pelmets etc if you pay more. Have you anything like this locally? Admittedly I do live in a city.

However, my new bedroom curtains that I love- navy velvet- are from Dunelm. I was surprised & impressed.

Lastly, I picked up some pricey Orla Kiely curtains for DS student flat the other week for £20 on FB Marketplace. They're 135cm drop too (hard to find), so I was well chuffed.

Find a bespoke curtain maker in your area. You will get beautiful handmade curtains that will be a real focus in your room. I’m a curtain maker myself, if you want to dm me I can find someone in your area (we talk to each other) to recommend. Not the cheapest way of dressing your windows but the best.

My bedroom curtains are from John Lewis. You can buy ready made or they will make them for you to whatever size you choose. Lots of quality fabrics and headings.

Summerhillsquare · 16/09/2024 22:31

I love mine from the Dunelm premium range.

3doughnutproblem · 16/09/2024 22:45

Next have some nice ones

elephantoverthehill · 16/09/2024 22:49

I make my own. As pp has said pm me if you're interested and near me.

Tangelo · 16/09/2024 22:49

John Lewis velvet curtains are good value for money. They have a nice long drop and a good weight to them. The lining doesn’t pull, and they hang well. They are polyester and would almost definitely be nicer in cotton velvet - but then they would be much more expensive too.

We also tried the equivalent from M&S which felt very cheap.

You might also try La Redoute. I have an excellent LR velvet bedspread that is very nice quality and wasn’t expensive

Nourishinghandcream · 16/09/2024 22:51

Dunelm M2M.

Had them on a few windows in our last house and were so impressed that we bought all our curtains & roman blinds from them when we moved.
We like heavy material with a good lining, makes them thermally efficient, blackout and they hang beautifully.

Not the cheapest and quite possibly an independent could have made them cheaper but we like the service.

Cutting Edge made to measure in Newbury and Basingstoke. Very happy with ours and planning to order some more for bedrooms.

Meadowfinch · 17/09/2024 02:35

If you look carefully in Dunelm, there are some pure cotton, poly-cotton-lined curtains that are very good value. They aren't very thick and I doubt very warm but better than most.

I make my own, fabric from the local fabric shop and a weekend with a sewing machine. But I tend to redecorate about once a decade so I need mine to last.

I second this.

Ebay every time. If you search 'country house curtains' or 'interlined curtains' you'll find quality second hand hand made curtains for the price of Dunelm but waaaaaay better quality.

aramox1 · 17/09/2024 05:12

John Lewis made to measure, linen/cotton, blackout lining, 15 years old still perfect.

NancyBellaDonna · 17/09/2024 05:25

I bought some heavyweight floor to ceiling m2m curtains from Dunelem on eBay for £25. I had to turn them up which was a task but I m very impressed with the quality and way they were made.

OneDayIWillLearn · 17/09/2024 09:52

Dunelm or John Lewis (I have some cotton velvet ones I got in the sale which are really nice and thick from JL). A friend swears by Laura Ashley but I’ve never bought any myself. Or a local fabric shop that does made to measure - a lot more expensive! Other than that the second hand route (FB marketplace, eBay, Vinted).

I would not be a fan of fake curtains at all but each to their own!

LadeOde · 17/09/2024 17:37

Oh my so many replies! I wasn't expecting so many so thanks so much for all your recommendations including the posters who offered to talk via pm which i will do and let you know.

It looks like another visit to JL might be useful . I don't think we have a local fabric shop but will check again,we're in Herts.

Love dunelm curtains …..mine are 9ft drop which isn’t always easy to find…..fully lined and so reasonable priced

ece123 · 24/11/2025 10:20

Don’t get curtains from Curtains2go. I ordered made to measure voiles and the reason why I chose voile over blinds was I thought I could wash them however the when they arrived the instructions say they are dry clean only! Very disappointedp!
