Like Bath but Up North

As with the title... we currently live in west Cornwall but with all the children now heading to university, we know we need to move as it's such a pain in the arse to get to and from here (and takes forever).

We'd like to live somewhere within an hour of an airport but that also has a bit of culture - good bookshops, restaurants, shops, theatre etc. We like Bath but really, it's still a bit south-westy and we'd prefer a change, prefereably in northern England near moors etc. Can anyone think of a place I'd like? All I can think of is Harrogate but have heard the traffic etc is awful.

Lincoln is a great place to live. Lots going on culturally and lots of history

RenoDakota · 15/09/2024 14:52

Harrogate, York, Ilkley.
Not Hebden Bridge, which is absolutely nothing like Bath (is crusty, hippy, 'alternative' rather than refined, genteel, cultured).

Crikeyalmighty · 15/09/2024 14:58

@Thistooshallpass24 hey Asa Bath resident we've got all that too !! but lots of nicer things to balance it off

Thistooshallpass24 · 15/09/2024 15:01

@Crikeyalmighty there nothing cultural at Selby, a pretty church, a leisure centre and an old style department store. I forgot they also have an eco refill shop
Still nobody would choose to relocate there, if you've sold a property in Bath you have money, you wouldn't be thinking Selby

Crikeyalmighty · 15/09/2024 15:02

My suggestions OP as a Bath resident would be Harrogate ( traffic about like Baths) York ( my pick) Beverley, Chester and maybe somewhere like Alnwick.

PuzzlesGal · 15/09/2024 15:02

One thing to note is that up north can be expensive - so what is your budget?

Crikeyalmighty · 15/09/2024 15:03

@Thistooshallpass24 I know- I've been- perfectly pleasant but not really I think what OP is after!!

There is some lovely villages around Wetherby close to Leeds Bradford Airport or Just over an hour to Manchester Airport. You can get into Leeds, York and Harrogate

Newcastle- northeast people have shortest commutes to work and city has loads of culture. You could live just outside - Northumberland either North or West with beautiful wild scenery and the coast. There is an airport too, with Durham Tees Valley and Edinburgh in easy reach.

Edited

I agree. We're about 40 minutes from the centre of Newcastle but live in a very rural village in the wilds of Northumberland. We often go to concerts in the Glasshouse in Gateshead and also theatre in Newcastle. We're also only about half an hour from Hexham which has an independent cinema, theatre and shops, several excellent restaurants and very good transport links to Newcastle and Carlisle.

We're about 40 minutes from Newcastle airport and about an hour and a half from Edinburgh which has loads of flights. We're also in the middle of some beautiful countryside and 45 minutes takes us to (in my opinion) some of the most beautiful beaches in England.

Thank you everyone - didn't expect this many replies so soon! I'm off to Google a few of them. I've been to Lancaster when dd was looking at Unis and think it will be a bit too wet.. had enough of that. Budget is high, so that's not a problem.

Just for fun, look at the games room in this place... anyone's Star Wars loving DH / DP will be very jealous :)

Lincoln surely doesn’t count as north?

Everywhere is up north if you're starting in Cornwall...

Lollzi86 · 15/09/2024 15:28

Harrogate, knaresborough, ripon, ilkley, Leeds (but the more rural parts). I live in Leeds and love where we are

Hairyfairy01 · 15/09/2024 15:46

Chester springs to mind, lovely city, near to airports and great countryside.

Spa town not soap town😂

Why would you not live there?

Gone12 · 15/09/2024 15:51

Durham
Ripon
Alnwick - although it's a traffic nightmare but probably no worse than Bath.

Gymmum82 · 15/09/2024 15:52

York or Chester both remind me a bit of bath. Harrogate is also nice but kind of in the middle of nowhere

Middle of Yorkshire, not nowhere!Grin

ElleDeeCB · 15/09/2024 15:59

It may not tick all your boxes, but I thought Stamford (Lincs) felt a lot like Bath, it has a theatre, is just over an hour to E Mids, Bham and Stansted airports, and very quick into a London.

TeamPolin · 15/09/2024 16:01

Harrogate was my first thought....

deltabluesandpinks · 15/09/2024 16:02

I immediately thought of York. Or Chester?

Tinybigtanya · 15/09/2024 16:03

St. Andrews has always reminded me of Durham but on a much smaller scale.

I've never been bath or know anything about it but I did think that being called bath and being a soap town was excellent until I saw your update 😂

PenelopePitStrop · 15/09/2024 16:05

Norwich?

Getonwitit · 15/09/2024 16:06

Inverness.
