Cleethorpes or Bridlington

Roxy69 · 11/09/2024 23:20

I'm looking for a property near the coast and can't find any good sites to make a decision. Anybody have any ideas please to help me decide. In ideally a not too depressing area as finances are tight.

Both have their problems. Both also, objectively, have very nice beaches and, objectively, nice houses very close to the beach. Brid is a bit closer to pleasant places and good scenery. Cleethorpes is in the arse end of nowhere. Both are a fair bit from any useful hub or large scale provision of anything (eg healthcare) much. One thing about Cleethorpes is there is a big focus on the renewables industry in the Humber area at the moment and there are a lot of people involved in it moving into the region - they're skilled and paid well and they want to live in the resort area rather than the industrial area so there are a lot of new houses being built and money is starting to come in. It's still quite rough though. Brid doesn't have any of that. It's pretty, but it's rough and there's not a lot going on.

Filey or Whitby are much nicer places.

Brid is not a shithole!!

HauntedBungalow · 12/09/2024 00:37

Whitby and to an extent Filey are really expensive and full of holiday lets + no good paid jobs for anyone who lives there so will decline in time, maybe not much time. Whitby in particular is fine if you want to live in an unaffordable theme park with no proper amenities for anyone who is there all year round but not much cop otherwise.

Cleethorpes for £160k - is actually in Grimsby but the main road takes you to the sea, three miles away. Two receptions, three bedrooms, big gardens and drive. Is a safe area.

Alternatively Brid on the actual seafront for similar price (and you could probably negotiate down), less space but low maintenance and you have the beach on your doorstep. https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/142342328?utmcampaign=property-details&utmcontent=buying&utmmedium=sharing&utmsource=copytoclipboard#/&channel=RESBUY

Actually these days, Cleethorpes is a really nice place. Cleethorpes gets my vote.

Don’t go to Whitby. Loads of social problems and drugs. Looks nice to visitors but isn’t any better than most other seaside resorts.
There are huge areas of Bridlington that are really nice obviously the more expensive bits. The town centre unfortunately has gone really down hill in recent years but it has some good facilities such as the swimming pool, spa and other theatre. Harbour is nice and the seafront both north and south beach are not scruffy so it’s only about 3 streets in the town centre. It’s not awful just empty shops and sad. 20 years ago it was so vibrant and such as great town centre. There is a shopping area on Quay Road which has more specialist shops. It's not far from York and Hull as well. The old town is nice and sewerby village lovely
The bungalow type estates off Marton Road are all good
Bridlington has good town bus services and cheap local taxi services and has a railway station
Cleethorpes isn’t great and the surrounding towns are worse.
Hornsea and Withernsea are nice but very isolated
Filey has the usual issues and is smaller
Scarborough is fine, does have issues in some areas Town centre run down but there’s investment going in over next few years to turn shopping centre in to cinema complex. The cheaper areas to live in Scarborough are not as nice as cheaper parts of Bridlington .

If you want a better town centre some if the market towns further inland Driffield Pocklington Malton Pickering.

There is Saltburn and New Marske further north as well on the coast. Nice enough but not got the same facilities and no where near as nice as Bridlington

You should go and visit Bridlington and see if you like it.

Has anyone saying that Cleethorpes is a shit hole actually been there?
It's really not. It's got some really lovely independent shops and restaurants and bars. The beach is beautiful, especially at the far south end.
There are a wide variety of house prices and few dodgy areas.
No, I don't live there, but I have. When I was relocating to where I am, for my job, every single one of my colleagues was astounded that I was leaving such a lovely place which says it all.

Powderblue1 · 12/09/2024 05:31

We visit Cleethorpes's a lot and would love to live there: there's been a lot of investment recently and it's continuing. There are so many lovely independent shop, cafes and restaurants and we love to go for a walk on the seafront, especially after our evening meal. Always lots going on but we prefer it quieter out of season. Humberston and Waltham are lovely local villages but you can't beat being central and walking to the seafront. The are down but the leisure centre is the nicest area to live in my opinion. Avoid Grimsby!

Good luck and enjoy.

TylerEndicott · 12/09/2024 19:58

I've been to both and out of the two would choose Cleethorpes. I know people knock Grimsby but the close proximity means that at least there's facilities and jobs that don't rely on tourists which is often a problem with seaside resorts.

TylerEndicott · 14/09/2024 12:43

There's a facebook group called We Love Cleethorpes, maybe have a look on there and see if you can get more of an idea. I know people do ask which areas are nice, and it's anything past the football ground apparently but the further you go south from there the better.

Jigsawpuzzled · 14/09/2024 12:45

I'm a big Cleethorpes fan but I've never been to Brid. I didn't much like whitby but it's fine, just feels a bit overhyped. Not what you asked but we also like skeggy

SuperFi · 15/09/2024 18:44

Crikey@Autumn1990 didn’t know Whitby had so many issues.

OP, I am definitely in the Brid camp, but prefer the areas just outside of the town Sewerby, Flamborough and Bempton .

Like a PP said, there isint much in the way jobs, but if you can work from home it wouldn’t be so much of a problem.

Roxy69 · 18/09/2024 12:22

Thank you all so much for posting views. It's most helpful. In terms of closeness to friends who might visit, although I'm not relying on that; probably Cleethorpes gets it. I must narrow my search as I keep getting distracted. Some surprisingly nice properties in Grimsby though!

Whichever one you go for try to visit a few times for a few days at different times of year. What’s it like in January when there are no visitors and the weather is awful, the dreaded bank hol weekend etc. and also to see what it’s like at different times of day, parking, buses etc

Leniriefenstahl · 21/09/2024 21:48

Whitby is always rammed full. Back in the day was traditionally popular with folk from the north east and Yorks but now it’s a lot more well known. And agreed that there’s a lot of social deprivation hidden away by all the boho tat shops. It’s also very expensive nowadays and slowly being gentrified by second home owners and air b n b.

Roxy69 · 25/09/2024 13:13

Thats interesting, beyond my budget I dare say, but on the list for a visit.
