Internet post move

I should start by saying I'm not remotely IT savvy and need advise in layman's terms. When we move there will be a couple of weeks before Internet is installed. I WFH, what/if can I buy to bridge the gap? I don't have enough data to hotspot and works firewall/vpn won't allow anything plugged into the laptop. I don't want to have to go into the office unless there's no alternative. What has everyone else done post move? Please hit me with ideas/advice/solutions?

We use EE who sent us a ‘halo hub’ which we used until instillation. It connected WiFi via 4G and was fine for working from home for the few weeks it took to book a slot.

you can order in advance but we’d lost ours so I did have to spend a few days at friends houses / in cafes first. But the service was pretty perfect when it arrived and really easy to plug in.

Could you ask your IT dept for advice? Assuming there is one.

In my place they hand out a dongle that can be used for a certain length of time to cover house moves with no broadband. We must use a work issued one.

When we moved BT gave us a temporary WiFi disk thing that worked straight away until our new cabling could be installed.

I moved house a few months ago and WFH full time...for various reasons I am waiting to set up proper WiFi, so in the interim I have one of these

Huawei E5783-230, CAT 6, Super-Fast 4G 300 Mbps, Travel Wi-Fi Hotspot (Genuine UK Warranty Stock)- Black
amzn.eu/d/cqqbaxO

And use it with a smarty unlimited sim £20pm and can cancel at any time.

It may not be the cheapest option, but I already had the Hotspot device and didn't want a contract data plan it was the easiest option for me.

Basically you buy the device pop in the sim and it creates a WiFi network

We have a 5G modem which is just like a small cylinder sat in our hall. Inside it we have a Lebara sim which we pay £25 a month for and attach absolutely everything in the house to run off it. Computers, four mobile devices, TVs. It’s basically mobile data in a container that works better than a mobile phone. It also gives us a better signal throughout the house than the BT modem ever did.

In fact if you google Lebara voucher, we just ordered a new sim for £12.50 a month and switched it to my name. We have a Vodafone mast within 500 ft of the house, which is why we chose them.

We no longer have home Broadband because when our internet goes down, they make a huge balls up of fixing it every single time and we were spending almost more on mobile data than the £55 a month BT contract itself cost.

I tried that EE thing that BT offer for movers when we moved in and the best speed we could get was a snail’s pace in the other half’s wardrobe room. For techies: 4mbps.

The downside of the sim only thing is outlay on the kit. I think the OH spent around £100 for the device, secondhand. Possibly not perfect for a short term fix but if you live in the countryside where the engineers are clueless, you very quickly save money.

Have you actually booked your installation - are you sure it’s going to take that long?

We recently moved, booked internet after exchange (2.5 weeks before our move) and were able to get it for the day after we moved in, plus they kept texting us offering earlier install dates.

I am out of contract with Sky and paying over the odds as a long time customer. I was going to close my Sky account and go with another supplier but haven't decided who yet (I know I should have done this weeks ago!) so it will be a gap for sure. I've seen a wifi rental service, has anyone used them? www.wifihire.co.uk/rent/moving-home-temporary-internet-hire/

3 (Three) does a 4/5G all you can eat data package that comes with a free router. They have a half price for first 6 months offer on a 1 year plan.

We have it as a backup as BT is very flakey round here.

DH works from home, and we have a Lebara Sim (works on Vodafone) in a (was Vodafone) dongle which costs £4.50 a month as back up (we're rural), this is on minimal data. You can also just run it for a month if you don't need it. Should it be down for days, we can log in online, and change the amount of data so we don't run out, and revert after we have our usual broadband back.

Alternatively can you go unlimited data on your contract for 1 month (buy extra data)
