Another relocation advice needed

Hi,
any advice would be great.
looking to relocate - basically anywhere in England. Just need a good sixth form and secondary school (ideally catholic if poss but not a deal breaker).
Also a market town where we can buy a 4 bed detached house with large garden and not too far from activities for teenagers.
My job allows me to work anywhere so not an issue.
Budget up to £500k as don’t want a bigger mortgage.
any suggestions of nice places that tick the boxes…. Oh and maybe 30 min train/car ride from a city … I know I am asking a lot.
thank you for reading

South Manchester? Schools are excellent, plenty for teenagers to do, good Catholic community and tram into Manchester takes around half an hour. Really good quality of life in my opinion.
But you might need to stretch your budget if you want 4 beds, detached, big garden in Sale, Altrincham or Timperley.

Saz12 · 01/09/2024 22:09

Does it have to be England? If not, should be feasible to be within 30 mins of Glasgow or Edinburgh with good quality of life.

Crikeyalmighty · 01/09/2024 22:10

@Seahorsemama where do you live at moment ( rough area)as no point suggesting where you are- when you say activities for teenagers - are we talking sports or shopping or a bit of both etc ?

HydrangeaRose · 01/09/2024 22:10

Macclesfield . All hallows catholic school or grammars in Altrincham . 25 mins train into Manchester.

Melonportal · 01/09/2024 22:11

Morpeth? It's a lovely market town with a great school, and a short train journey to Newcastle.

comeundone · 01/09/2024 22:14

Suspect South Mcr for those specs is going to be a push on 0.5 mi. Shrewsbury might do most of that except the half hour to a big city, it's a tad bit further to Bham iirc.

Buddenbruchs · 01/09/2024 22:37

Hebden Bridge
Anywhere in the North. With half a million.

MissAtomicBomb1 · 01/09/2024 22:42

Belper/duffield Derbyshire would fit your brief.

Seahorsemama · 02/09/2024 07:03

Thank you all - yes teenagers into shopping water sports that kind of stuff.
we currently live in south cambs.
England is preferred as husband will be staying in London a couple of days a week then returning to wfh rest of week. He drives so don’t need direct trains.
I have been looking at areas you have suggested. 😊

No way will you get that spec of a house for 500k in the nice parts of south Manchester. Not a chance.

circular1985 · 02/09/2024 09:09

South Cambridgeshire/north Essex border- Linton, saffron Walden, Royston with access to Hills Road 6th form (Cambridge).

GettingStuffed · 02/09/2024 09:46

Nailsea, two very good secondary schools close. Easy drive to Bristol also regular buses to Bristol and trains to Bristol and Taunton and further south west.

Mapletreelane · 02/09/2024 11:04

Nottinghamshire

Radcliffe on Trent /Bingham 20 to 30 mins from Nottingham City centre,.and have the option of Grantham or Nottingham for trains to London. Good schools. Have lovely little town centres.

Ruddington /West Bridgford/Edwalton/Gamston - 10 to 15 mins from Nottingham City Centre. There is a Catholic secondary school and 6th Form in Bridgford, The Becket School. You could get a modernish 4 bed detached just about for 500k but not a large garden

Both areas have lots going on for teenagers and close to Nottingham City Centre. Excellent plublic transport links.to the centre. City Ground (Nottingham Forest) Trent Bridge and the National Watersports Centre are in West Bridgford. Lots of concerts /gigs/shows at The motorpoint Arena,.Theatre Royal, Royal Concert Hall, Rock City . Plus the ice rink at the Arena which is home of the Nottingham Panthers and a great family outing with teenagers.

"we currently live in south cambs."

I don't think you'll find much in South Manchester for that money that is detached. Most 4 bed homes under £500k are going to be semi-detached.

Perhaps also think about closer to home? There are plenty of places in Norfolk and Suffolk.

For example, Kings Lynn is a nice place and has some good schools. Also, plenty of 4 bed detached houses for less than £500k in South Wootton.

Or maybe Thetford, half way between Cambridge and Norwich.

Then there is Sudbury in Suffolk or even Braintree in Essex that you can look at as well.

BritinDelco · 02/09/2024 14:27

Belper in Derbyshire would seem to fit the bill, along with a number of places along the A6 out of Derby, Duffield, Allestree etc. St Benedicts for Catholic school and at 6th form a lot of the catchment areas are more relaxed.

I wouldn't recommend going beyond Belper as public transport gets sketchy particularly in the evening

Normally about a 3 hour drive from most of London, or 90 mins train from St Pancras

They currently live in South cambs - also I'd be very surprised if you can get anything close to that spec in any of the places mentioned! I don't live far from the areas mentioned and 3-bed semis go for 600k+ even when needing work!

Would personally not choose to live in King's Lynn or Thetford... I'd head further north where you'd get much more for your money and much more pleasant surroundings!

5 bedroom detached house for sale in Reservoir Road, Gloucester, GL4 (rightmove.co.uk)

This is walking distance to a catholic secondary. Water sports aplenty at South Cerney lakes which is a drive away though. Trains super easy to Bristol, Birmingham, London (Paddington). I don't know the area that well though so I'm not recommending that house just posting that its available.

Check out this 5 bedroom detached house for sale on Rightmove

5 bedroom detached house for sale in Reservoir Road, Gloucester, GL4 for £550,000. Marketed by Murdock and Wasley Estate Agents, Gloucestershire

Kind of hard to know your definition for large garden -but a few here in Somerset/ west wilts -

Both Devizes and wells have lovely markets and good schools - I would have said Bradford on Avon but it's just over budget- but not by far -

I've added a few here in Salisbury too- as although a city- it's not a big one and is very pleasant with a superb market ( one of our favourite markets)!! A much underrated place I think and you get quite a lot for your money ( well relative to southern uk prices) a nice mix of independents and chains in lovely countryside- and a good mix of people too

Different school system though, if the OP is looking for secondary and sixth form then I wouldn't be moving north of the border with kids who are of exam ages.

Meezer · 02/09/2024 15:26

Bristol has a well regarded Catholic school St Bedes.
https://www.stbedescc.org/

It takes children from North Somerset as well as Bristol as it's on that side of Bristol- so if you want to be near the sea how about Portishead (Maybe Clevedon too but not sure if that's too far) to give you other good school options too. .
Your budget would be ok or as a poster above said Nailsea is cheaper for housing.

Hill's road is 1 of the best 6ths forms in the U.K., can your move wait a few years? The other comparable sixth form is Peter Symonds if you want to look in Hampshire. Don't underestimate excellent schooling that you are already getting in South Cambs.

Meezer · 02/09/2024 15:42

Yes Peter Symonds in Winchester is right by a train station too!

Colyton grammar is another possibility if you fancy Devon.

Seahorsemama · 02/09/2024 20:37

Thank you all for the suggestions- am going to have a look at a few of the areas.
