Suspected Gas Leak

Has anyone experienced hissing sounds near a gas line or felt drowsy because of one? I live in Huddersfield and have just told a relative to call the National Gas Emergency Service number on 0800 111 999 to be safe.

100 percent they must do this. Immediately.

We had a gas leak. Reported it. They arrived within the hour to fix it, no charge. Best customer service I've had for years.

I had a gas leak once. I wasn’t sure and felt nervous in case I reported it and it wasn’t a problem - just as well I did as there was. Better safe than sorry. They come out really fast

You can call the number for them. It doesn't have to be your house. (I have a sensitive nose and have reported many on street gas leaks not near my house! )

Pigeonqueen · 27/08/2024 17:42

Definitely ring the emergency number. Don’t use anything that may cause a spark whilst waiting for them to turn up. Wait outside if you can.

Call Cadent on their behalf. They will attend very quickly

Littletreefrog · 27/08/2024 17:45

Is this in their house? If so tell them to get out until they have been to check.

MrsMoastyToasty · 27/08/2024 18:24

They need to leave the house immediately. They will probably be suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Carbon monoxide is produced from burning fossil fuels not a leak of unburnt natural gas, which has an additive added to it so you can smell it if there is a leak.

I had a gas leak after an engineer moved the direction of the isolation handle you turn to disabled the supply

The trouble was, unbeknown to me, the engineer tightened the nuts on the meter too tightly and it started leaking a small amount of gas.

I bought a gas detector from fleabay which sounded an alarm that was loud enough to wake the dead, so I got Transco out and they replaced the meter with a new one and the engineer was very curious about the gas detector. They are worth having and are very good for finding gas leaks.

Yes, my response is very after the fact now but my 2 cents here. Hissing sounds near a gas line or feeling drowsy can indicate a gas leak, as it happened in a street I lived in in Plymouth many years ago. Evacuate the area, sounds dramatic but best to do until the potential leak is checked. Do call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 for safety, that was a good decision. Avoid the use of electrical switches or naked flames in the meantime. Stay safe through swift action. You can never be too careful regarding gas leaks.
