Council tax on rented home

I am trying to sell my flat, and would like to move nearer to family in a similar small flat. I don't want to hold a prospective buyer up by not having somewhere to go, so was thinking of applying to rent a flat privately in my intended area and staying there at weekends until I've sold my current flat. I know I would be paying council tax on both, but can anyone tell me if I will be paying more on one or both flats? I am single, therefore receive 25% single discount on my current flat, and have to stay in this area until flat is sold, as my workplace is nearby, otherwise it would be a 140 mile round commute. Have looked on the Govt website "How Council Tax works" but can not find an answer. Unwilling to rent my current flat out, as my next door neighbours property has been trashed and the tenant did a moonlight flit owing thousands in rent. My family have a dog, and I have a dog allergy, so am unable to move in with them.

You can only have the single person discount on one home. I own 2 houses and when single I used it for one and paid full for the other

You can only claim single person discount for one home.

I am trying to find out if the double council tax which is about to come in for 'empty' homes would apply if you have 2 homes where one is rented (ie you pay the full rate on one and double on the other as a deterrent to having a 2nd home).
There might be a period of grace.

Thankyou for all replies, i think I'd better leave the rental home search until I have accepted an offer on my current flat.

Spareroom has a 'Monday to Friday' option when you're looking for a room as a lodger. Someone once contacted me for a room 2 nights a week for several months while doing a course.

You could put up a search ad looking for a weekends only option in your new area and specify ensuite. Someone might be delighted to have a part time lodger and you might both find a regular arrangement more convenient than other options.

@Doable

Thankyou, the trouble with Spareroom is that the rooms are almost always furnished, and as I need to declutter, would have to pay for storage too.

I think I understand better now. You want to move most of your things out to a rented flat which you would carry on living in after selling your current flat then maybe look for another place to buy?

I thought you were mainly wanting to spend weekends in the area you're moving to without staying with family.

I am knee deep in decluttering so you have my sympathy. I got great inspiration from MN decluttering threads where I heard about the amazing YouTuber Dana K White. She even has advice about packing to move. (After a bereavement I was quite overwhelmed by the amount of stuff I needed to deal with. I like her because she starts from the position of finding it difficult to keep clutter under control and not being naturally gifted in domestic management).

Good luck with your move!
