We currently have 2 storage heaters and one plug in electric heater which costs a fortune so we were going to install gas central heating. Most houses around here have it already anyway, but ours is leasehold so we thought we had better get consent to put the meter box outside. We got that today from the council but saying

" This consent is granted on the understanding that you have obtained the necessary planning permission and building regulations approval, if appropriate, for the work contained in your plans. "

Firstly, do we need planning permission to install a new central heating system (because we are not replacing the same type of fuel) and what's all the building regulation stuff? I just went online to find out about planning permission, and what you need it for and following links for central heating systems (but it got very techinical) it was on about percentage of CO2 and things like that. I really am lost about how we get it installed now - MIL had it put in from scratch, but she rung British Gas who came a few months later and in it went. It's about 40 years old this house, so not a new build or anything... thanks so much if you can help, it's a real headache!

I;'m no expert but we fitted a few system, and had to have gas connected to our house, as there was a supply in teh road that didn't come to the house.

I think British Gas sorted out hte supply to teh house, ubt after that we got a CORGI registered heating man to do it.

Didn't do anything about planning / building regs as far as I remember.

I think it is just standard bit of disclaimer guff at bottom of letter - probably says same things on letters about new windows/loft conversions etc. I've had central heating systems installed in three properties and never occurred to me get planning consent or building regs permission. If you use a CORGI plumber, it should be done to that standard and they certify it anyway.

Phew, thanks for that! Just unsure as we are installing a meter box on the outside wall of the house whether that itslef needs planning permission - I guess I'll ring up and ask. Thanks alot

cat64 - our house is a similar age and we are hoping to install gas CH this year - does it take long/make a lot of mess - are they able to hide the pipes or do you have them runing up the walls, presume I would need to seriously de-clutter all rooms beforehand? sorry about all the questions.

I'll ask Dh when he gets in this evening. He's CORGI registered (although back to IT at the moment.)

Sorry to get back to you so late on this one, for some reason it didn't show on my threads. I asked Dh and he said that no planning permission is required. Maybe a condition of the lease but nothing to do with planning permission. AFAHK.

I'm in the middle of having it put in - bought a house with storage heaters only. No planning permission needed but there are flue site regulations ... distance from window / driveway / no vertical flues on front of house etc. All this falls under building regs. If you inform the local building inspectors of the work, they will send someone out to check once it is completed

My (elderly) PILs have just had a grant from the council towards having CH installed (and someone from the council will come to install it), but were told that they could only have 'over floor' pipes to keep installation costs down.

Presumably having them hidden under floorboards is more expensive in terms of labour, so that's something to take into account (though obv worth having done if you can).
