Do you think this house would be big enough for a family of 5?

We are currently renting and looking to move, the rental market is so hard right now and we have been turned down by so many but we may be in with a chance with this property. My only concern was, is it too small? The downstairs is all open plan. I have three children aged 5, 3 and 10 months but my two younger ones still sleep with us and my eldest always ends up bringing her mattress into our room😅
my husband thinks it’s fine but I’m thinking where are we putting everything? 😂
this isn’t the exact house but it is the layout (show home)

Of course it's big enough - there are three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a downstairs loo.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/08/2024 17:17

I've presumed OP will be renting it unfurnished on my previous response

LlamaNoDrama · 22/08/2024 17:39

I think it's too small but then it will be yours. Would you be able to move again in future if you needed more room or can you extend anywhere?

Overthebow · 22/08/2024 18:10

It'll be tight but doable. If you need to move and are struggling to find somewhere then go with this one. The second room looks big enough for 2 Dc to share so I'd put your 5 and 3 year olds in there, and the third room would make a good nursery for your baby. In the sotting room, get a big corner sofa like in the picture, but don't put ab armchair in the corner, you could use this space as a play area for the DC with toy storage.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/08/2024 18:12

@LlamaNoDrama not if she's renting she won't- OP hasn't said they would be buying it

@Lilacbluewaters are you planning on buying or renting this house?

A lot of people are giving you advice based on its value as an investment and moving up the property ladder but I interpreted it as you would still be renting.

Which is it because I think it affects the response!

Yes this is a rental property, we aren’t in the position to buy. I feel if I get offered this property I would be stupid to turn it down because of worrying too much about the size because we have already had no luck with so many other properties and ideally we really want to be moved out before the winter kicks in

does anyone here live in a Redrow property? It is semi-detached and I have 3 young children so do worry if the walls are thin!

I see this is a Redrow house - is this the largest you can afford on the estate?
We have a Letchworth (3-bed semi with 2 kids & 2 adults) - it's getting to be a squeeze but we're making it work, it's about 100 sqft larger than the one you are looking at. I'd say you can make that work & view it as a step on the ladder.
The open plan design downstairs isn't ideal but the bedroom set up is fine. You'll need to be creative with storage, but it's doable.
Have you been in the show home?

are You in a Redrow property? Are the walls thin, can you hear neighbours?

IKEA Kallax units are great for toy storage - even clothes storage!
Redrow is one of the better builders - we've been in ours for 12 years & it's been fab. Very energy efficient, new appliances etc.
Are you getting any deals from the sales team?

That’s good to hear! Our current house costs us ridiculous amounts in gas in the winter as it’s old and doesn’t retain its heat.
are The walls thin in these houses?

Our house is 2300sq foot and it’s just me and DH. I could not imagine a house just more than a third of ours with 3 extra people living there. How long will it be for? Do you need office space? Have you visited? How does the space flow? What will you do for storage? Is there outdoor space? What do location like? Is it cheaper than others to allow you to save for a house deposit/holidays/emergency fund?

DogDogGoose · 22/08/2024 20:42

Just seen you answered a lot of my questions in the update. Definitely better than black mould and leaking! How do the finances work out? Can you stretch to any more and are there better options that are only slightly more? If this is the top of your budget and the best you’ve seen then you will make it work

You need to move. Let not the perfect be the enemy of the good (or even the ok).

This house is ok. Where you are is not ok. The rental market is crazy asap, so if you can get it, do.
