Re-grouting painted tiles

I have some tiles in my kitchen that are white, with the exact same white grout, because the previous owners painted them both with what looks like white emulsion (found an old house listing that confirms that is what they did).

I would like black grout. Am I going to be able to scrape out the old grout if they have painted over it? Or, if I use a grout pen, will it give a clean line? It's quite bumpy in texture due to the paint, so I'm worried it won't look clean.

Have attached a pic of the offending tiles!

It looks like the grout lines/tile edges aren't straight so whatever you do it will look bumpy. If you try to scrape it out you risk taking the paint off the edge of the tiles too. The paint will wear off the tiles eventually anyway. If your budget allows you'd be better off ripping them up and retiling the whole area.

Thanks for replying. I thought that might be the case :( Sadly no budget for re-tiling at the moment!

I like your tiles the way they are!
I would definitely not try to scrape out and regrout or even use a grout pen ( they don't work at all! ) . Besides that, black grout with rustic tiles would look terrible IMO.
I would leave them alone and try to add colorful ( or black?) accents or accessories elsewhere and you will eventually not even notice yout tiles anymore. Frankly, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. ;)
