New front door. Inspiration, please

Looking at doors. I'm quite far north, so want something that will help keep us warm.

It will probably be a neutral colour and I want it to have a modern style.

I can't decide whether to have glass or not for light (probably) and which style. Looking for inspiration!

We've just ordered our new front door today, my advice would be to shop around. Our quotes went from £1200-£2100 for the same door & side panel. Anthracite grey UPV door with a long panel of glass with a swirl down it, side panel with satin glass. We were told the new style UPV were just as good as composite, composite would've been an extra £500. We were genuinely horrified at the cost of a door!

I have also been horrified by the price! Buying it first, then getting it fitted (working with port builders who are doing other stuff as well)

I can't decide whether to get a side panel as well.

Can understand the love for composite, I think its based on looks and nothing else. UPVC doors overlap the frame and create a much better seal. Composite sit in the frame like an old fashioned door and can let in an awful draught.

AreYouShittingMe · 18/08/2024 15:27

@ShuvieTupya that really helpful, thanks. I didn't realise. Also in the market for a new front door, and have been looking at composite only, but will now have a rethink!

I think front doors should be the same style as the house. I find it odd to see Victorian style doors on 1950's houses, for example. I have spent far too long considering a new front door, and got quite obsessed with people's front doors at one point Blush

I'm just here to mark my place to find recommended companies. Grin

We were told the UPVC doors are double sealed where composite only have a single seal that could be more draughty. I've attached a picture of what we have gone for the price is £1250 supplied and fitted, might not be everyone's taste but it will look lovely in our house

UPVC is tacky. Wood or aluminium only, please (the neighbour).

Dreamingofgoldfinchlane · 18/08/2024 18:23

Aluminium for excellent energy efficiency - depending on whether that works for your property obviously

MissAtomicBomb1 · 18/08/2024 19:17

Following as we're about to replace ours. It's wood & I'm sick or repainting it - south facing so cracks in the heat!
It's an older house so don't want anything super modern.

I love this

I’ve always had upvc until now. This house had a composite door and I love it. We’re adding a large 'porch' room (think this is the best way to describe it).

I'm keeping the original door in its place and getting a new front door (with electrical lock - I want to keep the old door in case of any failure: want always to have a door that locks manually).

I don’t have any problems with drafts currently, but had never looked at how it seals before: it sits within a frame when closed and has a rubber(?) seal around. Seems to work very well.

Ours is accoya wood which is very durable. Our house is Victorian so the style is traditional but take a look at accoya for a really sturdy, durable wooden door.

Lillipops · 19/08/2024 00:43

@AShortName thankyou, like I said it might not be to everyone's taste but we have a 1980s house and it's gonna look amazing once it's installed. Counting down the days 2-3 weeks. Had about 10 quotes and folk trying to rip us off left right and centre. If you get a quote make sure it includes VAT ....that's a curveball we didn't see. Only one company tho

Lillipops · 19/08/2024 00:46

@Papricat our next door neighbours have a composite door and you would never know the difference. We aren't precious would rather have a double sealed UPVC
