If you're moving a long way, is it best to get a removals firm who are based where you're moving TO?

It's about a 3 hour journey each way, I'm thinking it would be easier (and therefore possibly cheaper) for the removals firm to be based where we're moving to, so that they don't have a long journey home after a hard day's shifting. Does it work like that? Obviously I'll get quotes from both ends, but don't really have a clue where to start, so any general removals advice welcome

ime it is normal to get the firm where you are moving from

when we did it (over 200 miles) we got lots of quotes but only from where we were as they like to look at your 'stuff' and how much you have got and they did it over two days not one. So they packed all the stuff up day before apart from beds and essentials. Went home and slept presumably. Came back early morning of move to take beds and then drove down whilst we cleaned up etc Then unpacked on day 2

hope that makes sense

It was quite a trauma at the time, so good luck x

We moved 200 miles away, and then 200 miles (ish) back five years later. Both times, we used a company that was based where we were living at the time. It makes no difference pricewise (they still have to do two journeys and possibly an overnight stop), but I would rather that my removal men arrived refreshed and ready to work, rather than having already completed a 200 mile journey and possibly got lost en route.
Also, the first time we moved, they did all the packing for us too, so they needed to be local because they were at our house for two days before the move.

aha that all makes sense, thanks. 'Tis the first long-distance move we've done, and it does sound like it needs meticulous planning!

We did the same, moved out on the Wednesday and had the removal van turn up at new house on the Thursday morning.

As it was winter they would have moved us in in the dark!! It was Pickfords but dh's company were paying.

You just need your normal moving stuff (kettle, cups) plus overnight bag, clothes, a bed (we did blow up bed) and just put our duvet and pillows in our car.

Oh and location of local takeaway plus cutlery!!
