Does this plastering quote sound ok?

We’ve recently bought a house that’s a bit of a doer-upper. Plasterer was recommended by someone we know and trust, and has done one small job for us already.

Approx £1,160 for the following (for all labour and materials)
Sort some dodgy bits on porch ceiling
Skim living room ceiling (approx 3.15m x 5.7m)
Sort an uneven wall
Replaster the inside of a built in cupboard
Sort a small hole in the corner of one ceiling
Sort a bigger hole in the middle of another ceiling

Looks quite reasonable to me but would appreciate a sense-check before agreeing. (Not wild about trying to get multiple quotes as it’s such a faff getting tradesman round and we like this one.)

It sounds a little bit above what I'd expect but if it's someone you know will do a decent job and turn up on time etc then it's probably worth not haggling over or wasting time with getting extra quotes to save a small amount.

And things that sound small - like sorting dodgy bits - can be time consuming and fiddly.

Thanks! Also I should have said we are in the South East.

Me too - so definitely not wildly expensive but you would certainly find someone willing to do it cheaper.. but who knows to what standard!

Ohjustalittle · 13/08/2024 20:56

The price sounds like an average quote, I'm in the NW and have knowledge of tradesmen and prices. How did you find them have they been recommended?

howmanyottersonaplane · 13/08/2024 20:57

@Ohjustalittle we asked a few people in our local area for suggestions. He was recommended by someone whose husband used to work in the building trade and who we know and trust.

Well that's why people tend to get 3 quotes. Sounds quite a lot to me, depends where you are.

Summertimer · 13/08/2024 21:01

Bargain level cheap. Plastering is very skilled

howmanyottersonaplane · 13/08/2024 21:01

Thanks all - interesting to see the variety of responses!

It's certainly not over priced. You maybe able to get cheaper of course but I always trust recommendations and don't mind paying trained time served tradesmen over some odd job builder.

selldonaterecycle · 13/08/2024 21:03

Sounds about right to me especially as he's providing all materials. It's not cheap to get a good plastering job done - it's quite skilled actually which people tend to forget!

howmanyottersonaplane · 13/08/2024 21:06

Thanks all. Also forget to say that includes VAT as well.

My grandad was a plasterer, he was highly sort after for the quality of his work.

Legacyloops · 13/08/2024 21:58

£800 I paid for 1 room to be taped and skimmed, I'd say the quote was about right really

brightonrock123456789 · 13/08/2024 23:34

I was about to say that’s overpriced but then just re-read how big your ceiling is ! Maybe that’s ok - I would say a little on the high side but if he’s good it’ll be worth it.

Geneticsbunny · 14/08/2024 08:56

Plastering has got a lot more expensive over the last 5 years. Sounds like a reasonable quote to me

SwayingInTime · 14/08/2024 08:59

Sounds fine based on recent work we've had done

Nannyfannybanny · 14/08/2024 09:08

Also in the SE,last little corner before France. Around a grand, including vat and materials, recommended, used before. There's a big ceiling,a lot of complicated fiddling jobs. People think that's expensive! 8 years ago,DH was doing our bathroom while working ft with a long commute,we got quotes for the tiling... just labour, they were £200/£300 a day, and we're not talking 8 hours a day! He ended up doing the plastering himself and plaster boards in the kitchen.

howmanyottersonaplane · 14/08/2024 09:52

Thanks everyone! We’re going ahead with it.
