Joinery costs

Hi all,

We recently had some plastering done and now need some bits of joinery doing. We need x2 architrave, skirting board in 2 rooms, an interior windowsill and a bit of boxing in with MDF.
We've had 2 quotes so far, one for £900, the other for £1200.
Both quotes include material costs.
Is it me or does this seem incredibly expensive?!
We've got in touch with a few other companies for quotes but really weren't expecting it to be so much! We're based in Yorkshire for reference

The £900 sounds about right when you factor in their labour rate is most likely at least £400 plus per day

Yeah sounds expensive to me , a good joiner will do that in a day.

The first joiner said materials would be £300-£400 so that'd mean paying £5/600 in labour costs which just seems extreme to me

Definitely not expensive for a good joiner. Sadly many people don't rate a good workman's skill set especially if the architraves and skirtings have to be made to match existing ones. Costs of timber have risen hugely plus the usual business costs of insurance, tools, machinery transport and wages etc.

Joinery (the sort you describe) has been the most expensive part of our kitchen and hallway work, I am just trying not to think about it. The plastering and actual kitchen fit was cheaper than I thought!

You can price the materials up yourself to get a rough idea of the costs, it will all depend on the type of materials they are. If its pine skirting/ architrave/ windowboard then it’s relatively cheap, mdf will be more and hardwood the most expensive. It also depends how big the rooms are and also the size of the skirtings , smaller skirting/ architraves are easier/ quicker to fit.

I would snap your hand off for £900. Make it last me 2 days have enough time to make a perfect job and put my feet up for the rest of the week 🥳
